That's correct.poprox wrote:so if the median only holds within each course, we have no way to know the overall gpa median then? In other words, each professor curves to 3.3 median, but in the aggregate 1L gpas could have a higher or lower overall median

Does anyone know how to get our transcript to employers? Is there no way on ACES just to get an unofficial pdf or something?

haha no I didn't do even close to that well, and I meant a post graduate clerkship. I'm just curious because I don't know how hard they are to get for people who aren't aiming for D.C./2nd/9th.

That might rise slightly above "colloquialisms." Also, Les Miles is a total dumb-ass and we waxed you in basketball this weekend. Google informed that that is infact NOT a colloquialism. #Fail

Sure as hell am. Gonna be a great game next year. I think LSU is going to be really good in the fall if Mettenberger pans out.poprox wrote:lol, I know you're just bitter from the football seasonthickfreakness wrote:

No shot. I think he's going to USC. I just hope we get Cyrus K to keep building o-line depth. We've got a pretty decent class already.poprox wrote:and if Bama pulls clowneythickfreakness wrote:Sure as hell am. Gonna be a great game next year. I just thought it was a backhanded insult since Nick Saban is a wee little short man and Les Miles is huge.Jericwithers wrote:A true giant among midgets.thickfreakness wrote: That might rise slightly above "colloquialisms." Re: Duke Class of 2013
So I just lied to everyone when I said that 3.3 is median, 3.5 is top 30% (I think my "mentor" said this), and 3.7 is top 10%, eh?
I thought I heard that, but I guess I just made it up.
Just to clarify: the consensus is that medians/GPAs relax after 1L, so that the top 15% and top 35% would be lower than the "xoxo" numbers (assuming they are accurate)?
edit: even sillier than the rest of my post....

Do we just not know then? I'm a little bit above that listed median, and I"m trying to figure out where I stand. Is that too low to be competitive for OCI?dms87 wrote:So I just lied to everyone when I said that 3.3 is median, 3.5 is top 30% (I think my "mentor" said this), and 3.7 is top 10%, eh?

Re: Duke Class of 2013
Unless my memory of statistics is failing me, multiple sets with the same medians are going to end up approximating the median as a whole - i.e., I think 3.3 should be somewhere around the 1L-wide median.
The mean, on the other hand, is significantly greater than the median (I think) because the grade distribution is skewed. Basically I think if you graphed out 1L grades they'd look like a chi square distribution. But there's a reason no one cares about the mean.
As far as whether median is competitive for OCI, that's a question for the 2Ls. My impression is that if you're biglaw or bust you would do well to raise it at least a bit 2nd semester but from what I've heard it seems that, at least at peer schools, median will not kill you as long as you're smart about your bidding strategy. When I came for ASO last March I met a now 3L who said she definitely wasn't top third and got a biglaw offer in DC. Take from that what you will.

I did the bid-the-Bay-Area strategy and assume I was somewhat above median. This did not work.

Ok guys, DBA elections are next week. I have opinions on all the positions, but I will refrain from giving them until the ballot is final. However, I will say now that you and all your friends should vote for me for Internal Vice President. If you don't know who I am (and cannot figure it out once the ballot is posted) send me a PM. Also, please send me a PM if you want my spiel on the other positions once those races are posted.
And remember to vote!
