are there any 24-hr locations at UVA? what are they?

Damn man I was joking! I don't know (how would I) maybe it is a sick amount of studying or maybe it isn't. For the record if you read Wahool 1L's guide to his first year at UVA (where he made it to the top 10 percent) he said that he really didn't study any more than 4 hours outside of class for the first half of the semester. My insticts tell me that he may just be that naturally gifted though. Maybe Vanwinkle can answer this for us, he got Williams and Connolly level grades and from what I can tell he spent a lot of time on TLS throughout his 1L year.
It's not that much work. Perhaps 40 hours per week, including classes, is about what I did the first half of the semester, and a little bit more during the second half. If you know what you are doing (and not, for example, wasting time by briefing cases), you will have plenty of free time.

Another thing about the J term courses: January 7th 2011 is a Friday. Based on past experience, would a J term course seriously start on a Friday? Trying to plan when to come back from winter vacation, should I make sure to be back on like the 6th if I plan on taking a J term course?

Most J-term classes will be offered the week before spring semester starts. Plus, as a 1L, most of the popular J-term courses will already be filled.
ok so it's fine if we just skip it altogether right? it's optional?

J-term classes are completely optional. Also, they don't count toward the number of hours you're taking spring semester. That's important because you have to take a minimum number of hours, and you can't reduce it by taking a J-term course. I had to go figure that out myself. As a 1L that made it not worth it to me to do the J-term classes.

Also, having an extra week of break is nice.

They do count toward the total credit requirement though so that's useful.

Thanks for the J term info vanwinkle, Ycrevolution, Cavalier and gladiator.

There will probably only be one J term course I would be interested in, if I can't get into that as a 1L I'll probably just take the longer vacation.

Sorry if this has been asked already in the massive thread, but when do we indicate preferences for J term courses, and when will we find out if we got them? Thanks all.

Probably October or November.

Ivy Gardens Question:

There is a significant difference between the bedrooms in a 2-room apartment (one is 22 sq. ft. bigger with an attached bath and walk-in closet). Assuming you don't switch rooms during the year, I think it's fair for the person with the bigger room to pay more rent (total rent being $950). What would you say is a reasonable difference? 500 and 450? 525 and 425? Thanks.

sorry if this has been asked before or is really obvious but...
for 1L classes, is there just one final exam which is 100% of the grade? or are there midterms and such?

Some small-section classes will have one or two graded midterms, but I believe all of the larger classes just have a final that is worth 100% of your grade. Several professors during first semester, however, will give a practice midterm.

Will financial aid allow us to bill our textbooks to our student account if we do not have they money to get them when classes start? Our loan money won't be disbursed before classes begin (actually I don't know exactly when it will be dispersed)?

Did any sections have a real graded midterm? I knew of a few sections where if you did better on the midterm than your final then and only then the midterm would count, but that does very little work in practice.

My section (G) had two graded midterms, and I know section K had one graded midterm.

so a lot of these classes seem to have a no-laptop rule. do professors generally let you record the lectures or is that against the rules?

<----- Is going to be the guy who hides his recorder if it's not allowed and record lectures anyway.

How did you find out which classes had no-laptop rules?
