What percentage of UVA students who will be 3Ls this fall have summer associate positions?

Career services hasn't released the statistics. There were a number of 2Ls who started this summer without a legal job (any legal job, including unpaid/PI).

This is pretty disconcerting. I knew this year was supposed to be bad, but holy crap. Were they like, holding out for paid gigs or something considered "good" and just missed the boat entirely?!

I got the impression that 1) people were too dependent on OGI and 2) people didn't build up any credibility for PI work and just tried to run to it as a last-minute backup, and lost out to those who'd actually built up a resume of PI interest. Those kind of people were the ones who got screwed the most. PI was a lot more competitive because of the lack of SA hiring and 2Ls (rising 3Ls) not getting those jobs and needing to go somewhere.

It's going to be better this year from what I keep hearing. More firms are coming to OGI, the economy is starting to pick up, and firms are going to need to hire now to be ready 2 years from now to have grads in the pipeline when things are running more smoothly again. It won't be as good as the "good old days" of ~2005 or so, but it's getting better, slowly. Just be smarter about it and you can have a much better chance at finding a job.

Do I just send my UG transcripts to

I thought I had an e-mail saying where and what exactly to do but i'm at work on my phone and I cant seem to find it.

The address looks fine, but address it to the Office of Admissions (University of Virginia School of Law).

Do we just need to send our transcripts from the UG school we graduated from? Or any school we received credit from?

I just spoke with the nice (English?) lady in admissions. Only degree-granting school is necessary. They just need to be sure your actually graduated.

Different reasons for different people I suppose. If you weren't top 1/4 or 1/3, OGI was even more of an uphill battle (very uphill battle if your grades weren't good). And even for those with the grades, a number still didn't get offers from OGI.

I'm told that circa 2007, about 90% of the class got a job through OGI. I'm pretty sure that number is a lot lower now.

Though, based on the bid information that Career Services sent out this morning, it looks like people were way overbidding. 2/3 of the class bidding on Covington is going to result in 80% of those people absolutely wasting their bids.

Funny story, when I went to ASW and took the tour of the Rotunda, my mom and I were the only Black people on the tour. When the guide finished in the rotunda and we got out to the Lawn she pointed at the laundry area and started stuttering while looking at us and said that "unfortunately slaves resided there and did the laundry for students and faculty". She got choked up and couldn't remember what she was saying for a minute. We thought it was pretty funny--it was like she thought this was the first time we had heard about this whole slavery thing. I felt sorry for her because you could really tell she was uncomfortable. To be fair though it did seem like a lot of students were uncomfortable around Blacks--you could tell that a lot of students at UVA don't interact with Black people often. This struck me as a bit odd because I went to an UG In the deep south and most people there don't even act that way.

I know this was a few pages back, but I just wanted to comment that I did not feel this way at all. I thought about the possibility of feeling uncomfortable (because I'm AA) a little bit before going to the March ASW because I grew up in a diverse town and currently live in NYC, but it ended up not being an issue at all. It didn't seem like anyone was uncomfortable around me and I felt completely welcome -- from the school events, to the PILA for Pong event & being out at bar review I didn't get this vibe once. There were a lot less minorities around than I've been used to for the past few years, but it wasn't a problem for me...I wonder why you were getting this vibe.

Course the thing is, the Rotunda tours are given by the University Guide Service, an undergrad organization. You may have encountered a guide who grew up a very sheltered life and has not had any exposure to diversity prior to college.

I've mentioned this before, but the professors I'd most encourage avoiding are apparently not teaching 1L classes this fall. Your entire class is lucky as far as I'm concerned.

UVA seems to spread the all-star professors around. I think K looks the most attractive because I've heard that all four of those professors are great, and they are experts in their fields. However, it would be nearly impossible for me to rank the sections based on their professors, since I don't see any major disparities.

I'm quite surprised by the lack of uniformity in schedules between sections. For example, a section may have (not counting LRW) anywhere between 11 and 15 class sessions per week. For Contracts, everyone has the class for 240 minutes per week (either 3 X 80 or 4 X 60), except for the three sections that have Mahoney, whose class is inexplicably 5 X 60. Jeffries' Crim class is 3 X 50, whereas Coughlin's and Brown's are 3 X 60. And so on.

Excuse my ignorance, but where can we see this information?

Mahoney, being the dean, doesn't have a fixed class schedule because of other engagements he has. He will only teach four days a week, but those four days change each week, which explains why he's listed as teaching all five days. Don't worry, people who are in Mahoney's class won't have to endure 60 extra minutes of contracts each week. I don't know what's explains the differences in crim classes though.
