It's about that time!!!!!!

I know that some people have received deferred admission and know that they will be going to UVA in the fall, so let's get the ball rolling (since we have nothing else to do for a year).

12 months and counting!!!!!

The class of 2012 thread is currently 264 pages. I will be ashamed of TLS if this thread doesn't reach at least 300. Good luck everyone!

Congrats to everyone!

But yeah, y'all need to get at least 300.

Also, I'm too lazy to do find this myself right now, but there's some good instructions about setting up email (won't happen until April-ish) and such in the 2012 thread.

I also got in ED today so I thought I'd start doing my part to get us to 300.
Now I'm not sure how I'm going to make it through almost an entire year of anticipation.

Congrats to everyone who has gotten in!

Also, if you want to live in a nice place that is a 3 minute walk to the school, monitor Craigslist etc. for places on Arlington Blvd/Arlington Court.

If you want to be in the Jeffersonian on Arlington (3 min walk to the school and 3 min walk to Barracks Road Shopping Center), submit your app Jan. 01, 2010 (the first day they take apps). Apartments will quite likely be gone by Jan. 05.*

*If you want to get an apartment with what will be a remodeled kitchen with new cabinets/counter, and a one-year-old refrigerator and stove, PM me and I'll give you the apartment # to request (you'd also be living next door to me, for better or for worse).

Congrats everyone!!

I don't want to burst bubbles, but would someone who got in ED already this cycle be willing to PM me to discuss their thought process around potentially sacrificing merit based scholarships!? I'm struggling to decide right now if I can afford to ED.

I loved UVA too much so I decided to ED. Also, I don't want to get into specifics, but I was offered some $$.

Hey I have a question for the 1Ls is the whole beer/softball thing for real or overblown. Personally I am pretty excited about the prospects of it being similar to undergrad haha but don't want to get my hopes to high.

Congrats everyone!

Question: What is the housing situation like on campus? It seems like no one is trying to stay on campus. Is it really that bad???

There is very little "on grounds housing" (UVA has grounds, not a campus) for grad students and much of what they do have is for families. However, if you live on Arlington Blvd you're literally a block or two away from the law school. You can live that close in apartments, townhomes, or shared grad housing in the "Graduate Center".

Other people can't find space close to campus, either because they have specific needs or they waited too long (places on Arlington go quick), or they want to live farther out because it's cheaper.

No, it's not overblown. The main difference between UVA and undergrad, IMO, is the workload. Gone are the days of doing two hours of reading a week and only working hard around midterms and finals. However, people here still like to have a lot of fun. Each section has a softball game once a week, but if that's not enough, you can always join other teams too (most clubs have teams, or you could just form one with some friends). And there's definitely a lot of drinking - Thursday kegs, bar review, section mixers, tailgates, not to mention pregaming those events.

I don't know anyone who lives in University housing. Copeley (the dorm across from the law school) has only double-occupancy rooms. I'm not in undergrad anymore; I'm done sharing a room, and I think everyone else feels this way too. I think it might be slightly cheaper than the typical options (Ivy and Arlington), and you don't have to furnish it, but I wouldn't live there even if it was free.

I think UVA may have units with single rooms elsewhere, but not near the law school.

It's about as real as it gets. You can choose how much you participate in both drinking/partying and softball, but if you want plenty of both it's not hard to find.

The cake is a lie.

Like Cavalier said, the biggest difference is that you'll probably have to study more than in UG (if you majored in something non-sciency). There's plenty of social events and softball, and there's definitely more social events than I think most people can realistically attend. My section is having a mixer with a couple of other sections tonight; I'm staying in just because I've had a rough week (non-academically) and want to make a little progress on my LRW memo so I can go have fun tomorrow night.

I don't know of anyone living in campus housing. For the cost and amenities (you have to share a bedroom and live with three other people in a suite), I think it's worth it to live off-campus, either by yourself or with housemates. If you're in Ivy or on Arlington, you'll be 3-10 minutes walking distance from the law school. I'd go with something on Arlington, as Cavalier said, Arlington places tend to go quickly.
