I signed up for Zeitoun because I really like the author. It seems like a cool book.

the professor that's going to discuss that book is really great. i sat in on his Civ Pro class during the semester. also, the book does look really awesome..

I'm deciding between the merchant of venice or a man for all seasons.

Also, I read that we were supposed to get our tuition bills emailed to us on July 20th on the school's Fall 2010 schedule but I didn't get one. I just logged in to view my bill, and it said I wasn't registered for classes. I'm thinking that the bill releases were delayed until the 5th, when we're supposed to get our info?

Did anyone else get their bills?

if watching at home, you grit your teeth and watch whatever's on FOX/CBS. usually cbs, because fox has crappy broadcast quality for some reason. you will get ridiculously frustrated at the programming. like for the last two years, when they try to play tennessee titans games all the time because VY is the quarterback, despite the fact that i'd much rather be watching the texans. last year, they played titans games instead of texans games all throughout the beginning of the season while the titans lost even single week and the texans were winning and playing close, competitive games. they then switched to texans games right in time for tennessee to start winning and houston losing, then i think they finally stuck with houston to close it out. i can't remember that part, i was either in finals mode or out of town after december.

short answer: yes yes yes, watch at a bar. also, if your team is afc i hope you like getting dominated by houston. i see 11 wins in our future.

who are the profs?

Heh Well, I'm a Steelers fan, so I'm pretty sure those games won't be on too often. I found a Steelers bar that's less than a 10 minute bus ride from my apartment. I guess I'll just go with that! I don't really watch TV aside from sports, so I guess that saves me some money by not paying for cable every month.

I'm deciding between Melville and Archiblad Cox. The latter seems more interesting to me, but I'm worried about the professor; he doesn't seem to be my type.

I didn't get a bill either. When I called a couple weeks back I was told we'd get our bill when we are registered in early August. So I'm not worried yet.

Yeah, that one looked pretty interesting. Time to grab a Kindle preview!

The author is phenomenal, and that particular book looks amazing.

I picked "The Ride." I had it down to a few, and I found that one for 75 cents on half.com, so it won, haha. Merchant of Venice is one of my favorites, its a great read if you like Shakespeare.

On a side note, I finally moved at least half of my stuff to Austin this weekend. whoo!

I wholeheartedly concur. I actually took Bone's Civ Pro class, and he is by far the best professor I've had.

How easy is it to use the lockers really really often? I do my best work at the library, and I'm considering a 17" screen to try to mitigate the crappiness of not having two monitors. Those suckers are heavy, though. How crazy am I to think that I would be able to only carry one book and the laptop at a given time?

Not sure what lockers you are referring to but as a UT undergrad I signed up to "CampusWatch" newsletter and almost weekly there would be a reports of lockers getting broken into.

Bummer! I was also really hoping to leave my books and computer on campus overnight. Are there any 2L or 3Ls here who have used lockers? Are they safe?

I don't recall any lockers being broken into over the year. A friend of mine also stored his laptop in his locker over night and didn't have any problems.

I am a 2L and I had never heard of anyone's locker being broken into or anything being stolen. There were a couple times where I saw books sitting in a locker with the door open for days (stupid, but it happened) and nothing was stolen.

I didn't look at the link, but campus watch is almost always referring to the lockers in the gyms.

To answer the original question - it is very easy to use the lockers often. You almost always (unless the professor goes over time) have at least 10 minutes between classes.

And to those of you talking about the book discussions - I did it at last years orientation and found it boring and useless (there were actually people being gunners in the discussion - it was like a battle to see who knew the book better). Use that time during orientation to instead get to know your classmates and make friends.

I'm not surprised.

One hour doesn't seem like enough time to have a meaningful, productive discussion. I'll make sure I read the book, but I'll probably keep quiet during the discussion and focus on making friends and learning my way around.

Lockers: i've never heard of anyone's locker getting broken into. i even noticed that the locker next to mine was unused, and spent all of second semester putting the books that wouldn't fit in my first locker into that one. there was no lock on it all semester. nobody took anything. i've also left my laptop unattended in the library for over an hour and come back to it intact. and left it locked in my locker overnight. i don't necessarily recommend any of this, but just telling you what i've experienced.

book discussions: meh. i did the one with dean sager and prof cohen and it was fun, but you could take it or leave it. didn't really get much out of it. don't be in too much of a hurry to spend lots of time with your classmates at orientation, either. you'll have plenty of time to get to know each other over the next year.

NFL: go to bars for out of town games. there are lots to choose from.

* shrug *

Way I see it, enjoy orientation, enjoy the book discussion, don't take anything too seriously. Have fun with new people. I think that's pretty obvious and we're all mature and smart enough to know the book discussions aren't a be all and end all. Doesn't hurt to chat about them though.

However, for the record....

I will be in a hurry to spend time with my classmates because my classmates will be the only people I know in town, and I like to spend time with people. I promise not to tackle anyone, however.

Hey guys- been looking around for internet/cable deals recently and seemed to find a really good deal on internet if any of you are interested. If you are a new AT&T customer they have a promotion going until August 15 where you can get internet from 14.95/mo (lowest speed) to 19.95/mo (highest speed) for 12 months with no locked in contract or anything like that. It re-ups to its regular price after the 12 months but you can cancel before that happens.

http://www.att.com/gen/general?pid=6431

Anyone have any info on decent cable prices?
