Oh man. The housing talk in here is making my heart pitter patter. I have never been more excited--or more terrified--in my life. I can't wait to do this!

So I have a dumb question. I want to go apartment hunting soon, but I don't know where my husband will be working. It sounds like Hyde Park is a good catchall for grad students/young professionals, so I'm sure we'd be fine there. However, I'm concerned about his commute--I'd like for him to not have a terrible drive, since he's footing the bill for this and all . I guess what I'm wondering is, if we live in Hyde Park, what is the longest a drive to work could be, assuming he works in the absolute farthest place from Hyde Park within Austin? dammit, that made no sense. let me know if someone can decipher what I wrote.

Traffic is bad everywhere in Austin. In Hyde Park you have options on what to take depending on where you want to go. I find it hard to answer your question though because I have no clue where someone might work in Austin lol.adrib wrote:So I have a dumb question. Re: Texas 2013
adrib, I think you guys will want to wait until you find out where he's working. My friends in Austin and my trips down there give me the impression that traffic is almost unspeakably bad, so you'll definitely want a strategic location for both of you. You don't want to live in East Hyde Park and find out he's working way up north on the MoPac or something. You guys would never see each other!
Are you guys willing to consider buying? It's a buyer's market in Austin, and there's that 8000 tax credit, so if you can afford to buy you might want to get a real estate agent who can help you find the most strategic location and help you snag a great deal, too.

Re: Texas 2013
adrib, traffic in austin (from friends i've spoken to) is pretty bad. of course coming from a commuter city im used to it but for those who arent it could be a disaster lol. do you know where the husband will be working yet? that will help a lot.
i had a HORRIBLE NIGHTMARE experience with a Craigslist realtor and many friends who did their undergrad at UT warned me ahead of time that realtors in Austin are super shady lol. my experience proved to be that but i ended up finding an apartment in Hyde Park and pretty happy with it. i wanted something within a short commute to the school, in the Hyde Park area as others have suggested, relatively quiet/peaceful, and clean.
i have a housing sheet that i recieved from the secretary in the admissions office regarding housing that i would be more than happy to pass on. i've scanned it and it's on my computer so if anyone would like to see it shoot me a PM with your email address. it lists the different areas of austin, the pricing ranges, and even the pro's and con's of each area.

Agreed with above -it really depends where he works. My current boss lives in Round Rock and works slightly north of Hyde Park but makes it work. You can really get around traffic by playing the clock. If you have a 10:00 class, you will be fine. If you have an 8:00 class, get up early and drive in. You will beat the traffic and get some good studying done (either at the library if its open or at a coffee shop -there is at least one 24 hr one.) In addition, in Austin it is easier to live East/West of MoPac/35 than it is North/South. Prices are cheaper (especially East but the quality of life goes down a bit) and traffic isn't nearly as bad. Try looking for something in between 35 and MoPac and you might be able to find a happy medium.adrib wrote:So I have a dumb question. Happened to stumble upon another thread talking about using the IPAD in LS. They brought up the interesting point that you could scan your casebooks in and use Adobe software. This could be done in a Kindle/IPAD/Tablet. They gave an example of a professor that did this and would challenge her students to see who could find a reference first. As her students flipped through their pages, she simply did a command-find and beat them as they were still flipping the pages.UTaylor526 wrote:I'm sad to say this but it looks like the general opinion is it would be better money spent to skip the kindle and put the money into a better laptop. Eventually we will have our own little "what is the best laptop for LS" discussion (in addition to the countless already across TLS) but I am saving my money to purchase this summer and talking about it now will just make me antsy.soonergirl wrote:totally agree. States like California can wishfully mandate whatever they want, but digital editions will be the exception rather than the rule for a long time yet.Esc wrote:I don't think printed books will go out anytime soon, not for law students, anyway.
This raises two questions -
1. Is the time saved worth the time spent scanning in hundreds to thousands of pages?
2. How does this affect copyright law? Answer assuming you bought the books and are simply wanting to lighten your load in class AND answer assuming you and a friend split the cost and share the books with each of you having a e-copy also?

1. No - especially not when most professors ban electronics in the classroom anyway.UTaylor526 wrote:Happened to stumble upon another thread talking about using the IPAD in LS. 2. Probably not legal, not that I know anything about copyright.

Put down my deposit last night.
Minus the hipsters and schizophrenic homeless people, Hyde Park is a great place to live in. There is a 2-pump gas station at 43rd and Duval that has cheaper gas than Saudi Arabia.

Thanks for all your comments! I do have a question, though. I keep seeing different indications of what constitutes Hyde Park. For the purposes of grad student living, what do you consider the rough boundaries?batmansion wrote:I've been living in Hyde Park for a little over a year now, and probably will be at least until my lease ends in January, so I thought I'd talk about it a little....
That's all I can think of for now, so just ask if I left anything out...
Also, what is a batmansion?

What sort of budget is everyone who is on their own sort of planning on? Rent wise, I mean.

perfect. thanks. I'm trying to find the intersection of the Lee Elementary school district and Hyde Park, so this helps a lot. It's amazing how different the elementary schools are, even just a few blocks apart.batmansion wrote:I'd define Hyde Park as roughly the neighborhood north of the university, all the way up to 51st street, bounded on the east by the highway and west by either Guadalupe or Lamar.soonergirl wrote: Thanks for all your comments! Just rent? I wouldn't spend more than $750 without any utilities included.Pearalegal wrote:What sort of budget is everyone who is on their own sort of planning on? Rent wise, I mean.
I would Call Hyde Park anything between 30th st to the South and 51st street-ish to the North, centering around Speedway but bounded by Red River on the East and Guadalupe on the West. 'Historic' Hyde Park starts at 38th St., but there are a ton of options before even reaching 38th St.

$4800 in grants awarded. Not bad I guess, but it is half of what UCLA would give (yet is more than half of what my scholarship would be for the year ).
Im guessing I cant negotiate this amount right? lol

There's not an institution-wide policy on the subject so it does vary from class to class. Laptops weren't allowed in my contracts or (if I recall correctly) torts last semester, though my CivPro professor allowed them. This semester ConLaw and Property both allow laptops, though CrimLaw doesn't [God, I hate that last class so goddamn much, at least in ConLaw the professor is so ancient and tenured he doesn't care about offending *everybody*.]sternc wrote:Are laptops allowed in most professor's classes?
Also, welcome aboard and all that.
Edit: Re: Housing: Hyde Park is fairly nice so far as such things go though a little on the higher side for rent [to my meager budget, anyway]. Personally, if I move, I'm going to look for places in the East Side. There are parts that are supposed to be ramping up gentrification, but, assuming you don't have anything against "terrifying minorities" there are some neat places available cheaply and quite close to school.
