I wasn't trying to be rude. I was just kinda curious about how Emory got this reputation. I put down my deposit already and I'll be visiting Atlanta this weekend for the first time in a while. I'm pretty freaking excited about Emory.

Yeah it's cool man, this wasn't directed at you. I was just wondering how it got that rep too. Doesn't really make a lot of sense to me, and I haven't gotten that vibe from anybody I've interacted with that actually goes to Emory.

Not sure about the rep. If you asked people around here I doubt they would know what you are talking about. Some people love it here, others are just happy, and some are not so happy. For a variety of reasons. Just like everywhere else. But a large contingent of disgruntled northeasterners? ehh, not so much.

$1100 is almost a little too reasonable - I'd want to see it. I rented a 3 bedroom/2 bathroom house across N. Decatur from the law school (nice neighborhood) and the three of us paid a total of $2,000. And that was about 8 years ago. But if it looks like a decent house jump on it!

I had a two bedroom/two bath condo for $900. About the same distance from campus Eastward.

Right. And Rando is right too, it's absolutely not a sentiment that you hear from the student body.

As far as carpetbagging, we've got about the same geographic profile as any top school in the South, or of any school generally. Also, Atlanta, as a city, is far less "southern" than Charlottesville/Durham/Nashville/Lexington/Tuscaloosa/Chapel Hill. (That's mainly a function of its size; I think it has the 9th largest metropolitan population in the country now--the Fortune 500 has driven out the Dixie.) So in that sense--as a function of our city, not our student body--we're probably the least "southern" school in the South.

But we've still got an inordinate number of ex-frat kids running around in pastels and boat shoes. Don't worry.

Well, if you look at that schedule (that's the c/o 2013's actual 1L schedule, by the way), you'll see one or two letters next to each class name. The letters indicate the section.

So, if you were in Section C, you'd have:
Leg & Reg on Monday/Wednesday from 9-10;
Torts on Tuesday/Thursday/Friday from 8:45-10;
Contracts on Monday/Tuesday/Thursday from 10:45-12;
Civ Pro on Tuesday/Thursday from 2-3:15;
and LWRAP (assuming "Jupiter") on Monday/Wednesday from 2-3:15.

(You'd also have some pretty awesome profs--Bederman, Vandall, Ruskola and Arthur all have big personalities.)

Anyway, you can generally expect to be on campus from 9-3, at a minimum. Many people stay in the library after class, obviously.

Thanks for posting this. I've worked the last 3 years outta UG... the schedule looks delicious. Friday is a single-class day? Wednesday had a 4 hour break straight in the middle of it? Is there something else missing from the list? I know law school is going to be terrible work, but there is something to be said for not being 'forced' to be somewhere.

I had the same reaction when I saw the schedule. The last time I wasn't working 40+ hours/week or in school + working 20 hours/week was my freshman year of college almost a decade ago. It'll be nice to have all of that free time, even if most of it is spent studying.

Just don't underestimate the time it takes to prep for classes. You are right though, the flexiibility is very nice.

Does anyone have any info about Emory placing grads in Texas?

I can't find the post, but I think you were also interested in the TI:GER program. Are you doing IP or going the straight patent law route? If so, when are you taking the patent bar? I started studying for it a few weeks back. At first it was pretty insane to me, but now (only 3ish weeks as I said) it already seems so much more manageable. I should/hope to pass the patent bar before classes start, to get it outta the way early. I am curious if that is the way most people go about it.

@ Rando: Now that we have an elective opened up in the Spring 1L can we fill it with one of the field placements? Getting around the 4 field limit would be nice. One max per semester right?

I doubt they will let you do a field placement first year. And employers probably won't give you an offer without any grades anyway. Because you normally interview for the following semester about halfway through the semester before.

Also - field placements are restricted to 2. That can be two 1-semester placements. Or 1 two-semester and 1 one-semester placement. But you can also do a clinic for up to a year. So combining clinics and placements, you can do one each semester outside of 1L year. I don't see it changing for next year, but I could be wrong.

As a follow up to the elective/curve talk earlier, word on the street now is that the grade in the elective won't count toward your 1L class rank--which is absolutely awesome. Also heard that you can't even report the grade to employers, which I guess makes sense.

So anyway, that's the rumor. This makes the elective idea 8000% percent better.

Sending in my deposit tomorrow. Man, I'm glad this whole business is done with. Look forward to meeting some of you at the ASW, and the rest at school in the fall. Or maybe you're all terribly mean in which case I don't look forward to it at all.

It depends. They take different numbers every year, according to how many teams/programs they line up with Tech. Also, you never know how many of your classmates are applying. I think 70 people applied my year, and they didn't take nearly that many.

But it helps in a really huge way to have a tech/hard science background. Everybody I know who had a relevant undergrad major got in. (There are a lot of non-science applicants who just think IP sounds cool; that's a harder sell.)

Sounds like your experience/demonstrated interest/whatever would make it a very good bet.

shutup about employee benefits before pre-registration for next fall closes! I don't want the word to get out...

For those asking about TI:GER, they generally take 10-14 ppl. There are 2 law students per team and 5-7 teams each year based on funding. Hard science degree is necessary for the patent track but not for the technology track. I know at least 4 non-Science degree students who got in this year (3 English majors included). It is harder to get in w/out a science degree because you can only apply for the technology track. I am not sure how many ppl applied, but the perception is that it's a competitive program.

Yeah, I want to take the patent bar in July. Passing before law school definitely seems to be the way to go.

I'm planning on patent work (prosecution and/or litigation), but I'll keep an open mind.
