University of South Carolina 2013

Postby crockerml » Tue Mar 02, 2010 4:32 pm

So I deferred my acceptance to USC last year and have already sent my deposit in and am looking forward to heading to Columbia next year to start law school. Noticed we didn't have a post yet so figured I'd start one up. Hope to hear from some other folks attending next year and maybe we can figure some things out about housing, roommates, and everything else that goes with this process. Hope to hear form others soon!

Went and visited around last year and really liked it but didn't get in to it too much cause I knew I had another year... I'm headed up from South GA so its kind of a new experience for me as well. Planning on a trip soon though to probably look a little more in depth and start trying to look for a place to live. You going up there for sure??

Looking at LSN, they seemed to be pretty generous to oos students last year... You think we can expect the same?

I hope so...my numbers werent striking but I heard back in less than a month so hopefully that quick turn around time bodes well for oos scholarships. 158+ seemed to be the magic number for them according to lsn

Im about 90% sure I will be in Columbia in the fall, went up for ASW and did a condo search. Need a roommate anyone else looking for one? The places around the school were pricey for a 1br but affordable if you have 2.

I received a scholarship but I have no idea how you could negotiate one. Can you elaborate?

Negotiating a scholarship would entail receiving another scholarship from a school and attempting to draw more money out of South Carolina by informing them of the scholarship at a equal/better school. Normally send a email to Susan Palmer or whoever signed your scholarship letter and attempt to draw more money out of them by attaching the scholarship offer from the other school, and telling them you really want to goto South Carolina but need more money

Seriously considering attending. I live in DC but am from Columbia, and would be more than happy to answer any questions anyone may have. Let me know.

I just graduated from USC for undergrad. I do not recommend living all the way out at Lake Murray, that's a hell of a commute just to go to class in the morning. There is a part on the highway called "dysfunction junction" that you will likely have to pass each day. Traffic in Columbia is some of the worst in the U.S. because the drivers are THE WORST in the U.S..

If you are looking for a good place, relatively close to campus to live I recommend the Shandon neighborhood or somewhere in Rosewood. These are both close to campus and really cool, quiet neighborhoods. Also, there are some great places behind the Capstone dining hall on campus. I had a lot of friends who lived there. A house or duplex type deal is definantly the way to go in Columbia though, as it really is a party school and the apartment complexes are filled with loud, partying college kids.

You can find lots of houses to rent in those neighborhoods for the same price or cheaper than any of the apartments, and they will be much less noisy. You can contact a real estate group called "The Shandon Group" also one called "Cantey", as well as checking the "Free Times Magazine" which is Columbia's local publication.

Alot of the houses for rent just have mom and pop landlords that only advertise with a sign in the front yard because they want to keep the same type of people in the neighborhood and don't want the "rift-raft" that can come with advertising more publicily. A good way to find these types of places is just to print out a map of the neighborhoods and drive through them, highlighting as you eliminate streets you've already traveled down. You can really find some great deals this way.

As far as night life, 5 points is mostly for undergrads and under age kids. Atleast most of the bars; I do however, recommend the bar Speakeasy in 5 points-it's a really chill spot that has lots of jazz music. If you want somewhere to get pizza and beer go to the Village Idiot, also in 5 points. The Whig has 50 cent tacos and cheap PBR beers on Tuesday night's, and brings in a really diverse crowd, it is directly across from the statehouse on the gervais st. side. In the Vista, the bars attract more of an adult crowd, Flying Saucer has a great beer selection. If you are looking for a very eccelectic and liberal crowd step on into Art Bar, but try to be open minded.

Hope that helps.
