PhantaManta wrote:Sure! It is Oasis Place, which is directly west of the police station on Sierra Vista. I figure locals will freak out @ the mention of this specific location, because I have a general idea about what Las Vegas locals think about it.

As far as the area being bad, to a degree that worries me, but in other ways it doesn't. I have heard a little about there being gang activity, which is what worries me. But most the specific examples people give me is that they were approached to buy drugs or prostitutes, etc. That kind of stuff might be annoying but not something that would greatly concern me.

And yeah I've used the crime thing for every location, and in fact, it made me more comfortable with living at this address. Out of the areas around campus, this address had an average number of crimes, 80 or so in any sixty day period. A few blocks east of campus I saw a location with 140+, and compared to other locations west and north, the range seemed to be 30 to 100.

I drove up and around the convention center, around Maryland and Sierra Vista, a few times at day and once at night, and never saw anything unusual. Small sample size, obviously. While there are a few apartment complexes that definitely look run down and shady on the same street, this one is pretty nice, the staff was very nice, and I saw a few people who lived there and they looked normal.

The apartment I would have would be on the interior of the complex facing the pool/office, and on the third floor, which makes me feel like it is not the most likely target of random crimes, but that might be total speculation on my part.

Anyways, It is very unlikely that I end up somewhere else at this point, unless something totally crazy changes my mind... Being in New York, it would be a huge pain to do another apartment search just because the area has a bad reputation. If it IS that bad, I'll just have to move after the lease is up.
That place doesn't actually seem bad. I toured several Camden properties when I was in town and they all seem to be pretty well-taken-care-of. The fact that your complex is all studios, you probably won't have to deal with nearly the same crap that other complexes do. I'd bet there are a lot of single casino employees that live in that complex. And they probably don't have a lot of people over...
Good point...hopefully some people arent housing ten kids in one place ;)

Phanta - I was more concerned youd be closer to campus. That isnt a bad choice. And youre right...you can always move after the lease if there are issues. Its not forever.

Cool!

@AsexualChocolate heh :D. I dunno if I consider myself a 'real New Yorker' since I'm from the suburbs, but areas of Vegas people have been telling me are bad are no worse than any commercial street/area here, at least at first glance. I mean, look, you can find bad stories to tell about anyplace. A mall I used to go to has had one or two murders over the last 10 years, and when I was 13/14 it was never a big deal for me and friends to take the bus there by ourselves... So I am curious to see after I live in Vegas for a couple years if it is simply a matter of people having a different attitude/perspective that makes it sound dangerous or if it really is.

@TaliaT That's good to hear, lol. Since I am already committed I was hoping you wouldn't say "you can't live there! you'll get murdered!"

Are you applying for the part-time program or will you just quit when you get in?

I want to be in the part time program of course. Ive asked to be placed on all three waitlists. Once the issue comes up...IF it does...then I will discuss further with the attorneys I work with. I really DONT want to give up this gig. Its an amazing opportunity with one of the better firms in town. But i also dont want to give up my education either. Tough call. Hopefully i get the best of both worlds. Here is to positive thinking!

Hey I got an email.

They said like.. registration packets or something are going on later this month (July) and unless you have your transcripts and immunization records in by then, they will place a hold on you.

If you didn't get this email, you probably have your stuff in ;)

I got that email. UNLV has my shot records and, well, my transcripts of course, but apparently I may as well be transferring from New York

That's just annoying. What sucks is that I can't find proof of my second MMR, so I have to go pay money to get jabbed on Tuesday >.>

Ya, I have all my stuff in and I didn't get the email. I haven't realized law school starts in a month and half. I guess it will be more real with the arrival of the registration packet :P

I can't wait to find out if I'm in the "stupid kid section" or the "honors kid section." If the former, I'll be looking for a bumper sticker for mom: "my stupid law student beat up your honors law student..."

I got another email. This one is from the SBA and is a questionare so that they can match us with a mentor! hooray!

On another note, has anyone had any updates to their loans? My loans still are for the wrong amount, and I'm not sure if I should accept them or what....

I just heard back from Nathan Neeley about this, and basically... we can actually take out $21,400 or something. The scholarships are in the system, just not anywhere we can see them yet. From what I gathered, we can take out more than $17,850 because the total Cost of Attendance includes $33,400 for tuition, $17,850 for living, and the rest is for other stuff (he mentioned that it includes a first year laptop price.)

The total number he gave me for this year was $54,810.

Hope this helps!

So, y'all want to give me a tour when I head on down there from Reno? I want to check out the campus. I hate Vegas as a place, I'm from Reno, so the Casino think is actually a big turn-off. However I hear the Law Campus is quite nice, I'm excited to see it. Anywho, congrats on getting in and good luck!

So, does that mean we can take out $21,400 in loans for COA (above tuition) instead of just $17,850?

While I can't condone tooling around with a wolf, since you've come to your senses long enough to become a Rebel (even under duress) I suppose I can at least buy you a consolatory beer.

For real though, there's not much tour to give (the campus isn't huge, and the law school is super-small) but if you want to kick it, I'd be glad to chill for a bit.

Edit: Also, $21.5k would be clutch. Looking at my loans again, that seems like what they're setting up.

Ive been fussing with loan stuff this week as well. Its even worse when you are in the waitlisted category because nothing can be paid of modified until I know for sure. August 13th here we come (how appropriate its a Friday the 13th)

Talia,
Any progress with Posner's How Judges Think? I just finished Posner's Cardozo: A Study in Reputation which is explicitly written for lawyers and non-lawyers. He often has asides and footnotes for those of us with the intellectual handicap. I'm guessing How Judges Think is going to be more law-knowledge based, but I'm interested to hear your thoughts. Let me know.

To tell you the truth...it read more along the lines for those that are lawyers. Not sure if that makes me seem less "worthy" to be a lawyer. I didnt get much through it...went on to other things and started working again which means less emphasis on reading after work as of right now.

Id be interested in trying out Cardozo: A Study in Reputation however.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
