why the hell would you live in KOP?

hey all,

i'm a 1L at villanova, if anyone has any questions, feel free to ask! i'd prefer to keep the questions in the thread for everyone's benefit.

and yes, the food in the cafeteria is not the best around, heh.

I have few if you wouldn't mind :)

1) How do the locals feel about Villanova vs. Temple? I think both being strong regional schools, what locals think about each school matter a lot right?

2) Does Villanova have any specific subjects that they are known for, just as Temple is known for their trial-advocacy and international law? I'm just curious about the differences because I have applied to both.

3) What's one thing you like about being a Villanova student so far?

Any advice on locations to live/ cost vs quality of apartments in the area.

Thanks.

1) if you're talking about law school, it doesn't get talked about too much. people are pretty happy hear and don't talk too much about it! if you're talking about basketball, well obviously we talk crap about temple pretty often :)

2) not sure about subjects, but the faculty has very impressive credentials. nova also has great job placement in philly. and i've noticed that the connection to alumni is VERY STRONG and very often prefer to hire villanova grads.

3) One thing? that's hard. i absolutely love it here. but i'd have to say the faculty. they legitimately care about students. everyone from professors to administration. it's really impressive. i'll be walking in the halls and dean so-and-so will say "hello" and call me by my name, and i've never met him/her before! professors are very eager to meet outside the classroom. and there are often small events called SOS put on by SBA and they bring a few kegs of yeungling into the dining room for free. can't argue with that :D

nova actually has a list you'll receive if you matriculate that lists everything. i live at radnor house and i love it. a whole lot of law students live at radnor too. it's a tiny bit pricier than other areas, but it is WELL worth it because we have security, trash service, pool, etc. the area is absolutely beautiful. they're great quality apartments too, but as i've seen other places in the area, there's some REALLY nice complexes around here (but the price goes up). in short, i haven't met anyone that's actually unhappy with where they live.

i would recommend radnor house or radcliffe house because they are within walking distance to the bars that the law students attend for the most part. lots of school events are at a bar called flip & baileys. there's a few other bars within walking distance like kelly's. further down is brownies. it's a good area.

oh yes, absolutely. there's a number of places within walking distance. like i said in the previous response, radnor house would be the best choice. its less than a mile from school. i know a few people that walk everyday. either way, there's so many students that live in radnor that you can easily get a ride to and from school during the cold months. a single at radnor goes for about $875/month plus utilities. there's a bank of america right next door, and a mcdonalds, and within walking distance to all the bars that everyone goes to. you really can't beat it.

no different than any other school. i believe most find out in march sometime. i have a feeling most schools might not be giving quite as many scholarships this year as they have in the past because of the economy lately, but that's pure conjecture on my part.

I disagree with the premise that not telling students until March is SOP for law schools. I applied to 15 schools and have already heard about aid from all of them except three (Nova and two others that I was accepted to THIS WEEK).

I would actually say that's a VERY late and exceptional practice.

New to the forum :)

I was accepted on the 20th and applied on the 6th of this month, so that made me really happy.

I am from LA, and I want to go to school in the NE. So I have to ask, do I need a car? Can I walk to campus?

Thank you :)

oops, i misspoke. i was actually addressing two different questions, i can see how what i said is confusing.

i agree with you. what i MEANT to say was that their generosity is no different from any other school, and that most people waiting to hear about money from VILLANOVA find out in march. my b.

a few of the residences where most law students live are less than a mile. i know a number of people that walked the first semester, although most end up getting cars second semester just for the convenience. there's enough people in the area though that if you need a ride, you can usually find one. just be careful not to take advantage of someone too much

Thanks for answering questions! Do you by any chance remember what day orientation started last year? I was just looking over Temple's packet and noticed they start August 16th, a bit earlier than I would have guessed.

Also, how many Nova students live in Manayunk or even as far as Old City?

Orientation last year was the week of aug 23. monday and tuesday was orientation, we had wednesday off to prepare, and thursday started classes.

i couldn't tell you how many students live in manayunk or farther, so that suggests to me that not many do. most people live in radnor, bryn mawr, ardmore, havertown, wayne, maybe a few others. i believe there's a list of complexes on the VLS website that students use.

hope that helps!

I was just wondering if you could talking about the work load? How rigorous is the day-to-day work, time commitment etc. thanks a lot.
