I think I'll be sending in my deposit next week. When I called the school back in January to ask about an ASD, I was told they don't do one. Has anyone heard anything more about the one you all are mentioning in late March?

WPC, pay no attention to the troll.

Suffolk is definitely a good school. Sure it'll be harder to get a big law job from there but you'll just have to work harder.

Accepted today! Congrats to Suffolk moving to a Tier 3, I really like this school but I already gave Northeastern my deposit and I love their coop program. But good luck to everyone.

Bump it up.

Loans are in. Second seat deposit is in. I've even found a place to live!

Who else has committed? I see a few on LSN are attending but where are you all at in the process?

I'm committed as of yesterday. Probably visiting to find a place to live in late June. Just waiting on loans as of now....

What's up my Suffolk people? I'm officially in and attending the part-time program. I work a block away from the law school, live in the area, and am from Boston.....I am more than willing to answer any questions you have about the city, places to live, T accessibility, etc....

I remember looking up one a few months ago but I think they were separated by sections. I think we get our section assignments on the 6th or 8th -- it says it in the book they sent me a few weeks back, I believe. I'll go re-read it to check if it gives a def. date.

I am a little late to discussion, last minute decision to attend Suffolk in the fall. Have any of you filled out the MPN's or filled out information for plus loans? I called the Fin. Aid office and they said wait until you receive an email, but tuition payments are due in July. It seems to be getting late.

Yes, I've filled out my MPNs at studentloans.gov about a week or two ago. I would encourage you to fill them out now...like right this minute.

brennacj wrote:I just got accepted to Suffolk as well and Im deciding between Suffolk and New York Law School. Suffolk seems to have a better regional reputation. But I'm a little concerned with all the negative comments on this page. Are they all true? I am definitely an over achieving student (I'm just graduating from college now) so I know if I really push myself i could be in the top 10% of the class, but is suffolk really no that competitive with BC and BU?

top 5% is absolutely competitive with anything above top 25-30% BC/BU (below that BC/BU is more than likely going to win out head to head). After that a comparison is a bit of a stretch. I guess maybe top 20% suffolk>bottom 10% BC/BU, but if you look at firm sites, the numbers (or staff) don't lie. Though there are a decent number of Suffolk grads in some great firms, you have to take into account that Suffolk is a HUGE law school (I think between full and part time it is top 5 enrollment). Compare that to the relatively small enrollments at BC/BU and you get roughly those percentages.

That is not to say Suffolk is a "bad" school"; it would have to be counted among the top Tier 3 schools in the country. Additionally, Boston is a fairly large (and highly insulated) legal market though, so it's not as if Suffolk grads cannot find decent jobs if they are in the top half of their class. Below that, I think you may experience some difficulty finding employment that is suitable to pay off the loans one would take on at Suffolk. Not a death sentence, but certainly an unenviable position coming out into the job market in this economy.

As to being in the top 10%, I would highly discourage that being part of your "equation" when deciding on whether to attend. Unless you are entering on a full merit scholarship, it would simply not be prudent to take 1 in 10 odds--great goal to have, but certainly not a rationale assumption to go into school with. Due to the nature of Suffolk's job prospects, it is known to be an incredibly competitive school--everyone is going to be working hard to get into the top 10%, so you are probably not going to be anything out of the ordinary in terms of work ethic. I think setting a mark for top 50% if you know you are truly committed to your studies is a more realistic expectation to consider in your decision making process.

Again, Suffolk is a solid law school, but including it in the same breadth as BC/BU is simply not a very valid comparison

I would certainly hesitate to drop $42,000 a year on tuition at any school in the Boston area...apart from Harvard.

I cannot stress just how saturated the market is in the Boston metro area.

Sure, there are many Suffolk law grads who work at good firms and are good lawyers. As a pure numbers game you would expect that given that they pump out hundreds of grads a year, most of whom stay in the area!

If you do not get Biglaw you are looking at a $45-$55k salary in a small firm. State is on a hiring freeze or is cutting people. Federal jobs in Boston are few and far between and only go to the top credentialed lawyers. That's just a fact.

If your parents are lawyers, if you get a good scholly, or can live at home or go to the night program it might be worth it....if you want to be a lawyer more than anything. Otherwise you are looking at a real tough time.

I just want people to be realistic. If I had kids who wanted to pay sticker to go to law school....I would say "NO"...unless it was a T%5 or so.
