Heading to DC on the 19th for a week of apartment looking - been doing some preliminary web based stuff in advance of course. You can actually find studios that range from 1100-1400 and have a fair amount of square footage, especially if you're willing to move away from Foggy Bottom a bit.

I'm looking at a lot of stuff around Dupont (four metro stops total with one connection, or depending on where in Dupont you can actually walk it) and downtown (around McPhearson or Farragut West) that are all very reasonable.

Sadly there's like NOTHING around Farragut West... I tried that too =/

But hey, if you save enough money with your housing you can get a scooter! You can park those on the bike racks, the GW parking people said so.

Also, check out English Basements. They're so much cheaper, and since so much of the architecture in DC is Victorian in style you can often find these with quite large windows and very minimal basementy-ness... but I haven't found any in Foggy Bottom (it seems to be full of 1960s apartment buildings).

I met with this great realtor, John A., while I was visiting. I'll pm you his contact info. He was really helpful though I didn't end up taking one of his units.

I don't think I could do any sort of basementy.

One of my requirements (and I've prepped my parents for this expense) is that I need either a balcony or floor-to-ceiling windows.

In the apartment I lived in this year I was right next to the walkway so it was either keep my curtains closed or give everyone a view of my room. I opted to keep my curtains closed.

To make up for that I want big sweeping windows that let in tons of light - preferably east facing!

Also I consider near anything within 6 or 7 blocks.

I think if you look in other neighborhoods, you will find a more space for your buck. I found a place in Capitol Hill blocks from the congress building, and about 10 minutes from the Eastern Market metro ( Blue line) for $750 all utlities included. It is a very nice residential neighborhood also.

lollll. yeah my apartment is north facing =/ it does have windows the entire length of the apartment (not quite to the floor though) and seems to get plenty of light that way.

Got my invite to the pre-orientation PI days, and pretty sure that I'm going.

I sent in my application but they say on the form if there are more than 100 people they'll do a lottery. I think that sucks... because I submitted mine so fast (I should get a spot! come on!) also how much do you love that they acknowledged that 8am is a very uncivilized time of day?

Yeah, I'll be disappointed if they do a lottery and I don't get a spot - my quick response should be rewarded. ;)

8:00 am IS a very uncivilized time of day. Although, with my luck, I'll say that here and find out that I start class at 8am three times a week or something.

oh no, do they do that? I was hoping they started at 9. 8:40 was the earliest possible at my UG and those were rare...

Could somebody clue me in on what the public interest program is? I couldn't find any information on the GW website.

Dear GW Law 1L:

Congratulations on your admission to The George Washington University Law
School!

As a newly admitted student who indicated a strong preference for public interest
work, you are invited to a special, voluntary, pre-orientation Public Interest/Public
Service Law Program that will take place on Monday and Tuesday, August 16-17,
2010. An invitation memo is attached with many more details.

For 1Ls, the Public Interest/Public Service Law Program is a great way to kick off
orientation week, to get out and see the city, and meet new classmates. We hope to
see many of you there.

If you have any questions after reading the memo, don't hesitate to ask them by reply
e-mail. Once again, welcome to GW!

- They sent this email out, HTH

I submitted my application for the public interest/service program this morning. Anybody else more interested in the jail than the school?

Definitely... I bet most people will prefer that option.

Yeah. We've all been in schools before. I wouldn't mind spending the morning doing some physical labor (and would prefer it over some educational tour), but I'd like to see the inside of a jail more.

I am planning on never raising my hand in class and studying exclusively in my apartment. No one needs to know my habits or anything about my academic commitment.

I think we get our section assignments at orientation.

Also, just got an e-mail from Dean Lawrence announcing his departure for Brandeis University after this fall. Dean Maggs will be the interim head until they find a replacement.

Yeah, that's kind of disappointing. I really liked him at the ASD.

Dupont and Adams Morgan neighborhoods are so close to school. 15 minute walk. Drive is like 5 minutes. I rented an apartment this weekend during my visit in DC (I'm back in L.A. now) on Columbia Rd. off of Connecticut Ave. Really nice area, great apartment.
