Unfortunately you're right. Got any tips for a fellow UVA URM student (1L) in getting out of here with a job?

Congrats! What do you think was the key to landing so high up in your class?

AA male, Lower T14, LR, very close to the top 10%, but not sure exact ranking.

17 on campus interviews
13 callbacks, of which I went on 6. So far 5 offers.

As for what was the key with landing so high in the class, no idea at all.

As much as people poo-poo Journals, it looks like it can be a good soft for URMs especially since there are so few of them on LR/Journal at many schools.

haven't read the thread (if I prove to be contradicted, I'll edit), but it seems to me like "URM" becomes "black people" for most firms (since most don't ask you to fill out those demographic questionnaires), because everything is done on the surface. Unless you have a Hispanic sounding name or something. (point being the URM application boost may not translate to a URM hiring boost without a box to check? Idk.)

I have doubts about the URM hiring boost. I got trounced pretty solidly at OCI at firms that should have been targets or safeties given my numbers.

From what I experienced/heard during my OCI season, URM for firm hiring means more than black people. For one firm had an offer from, they go as far as including Persians in their category of URM. So for firm hiring, URM= anyone who isn't white. Asians are recruited just as heavily as black, latino, and native american candidates.

I am an Hispanic with a non-Hispanic last name. I actually had a pretty rough go at OCI. I ended up getting an offer (by the skin of my teeth!), but I was really surprised by the negative responses of two firms in particular. I have several scholarships for law school, including one scholarship from each of two large firms in my home state. I also made law review at a T20, top 10%. One of the firms in question gave me a screening interview and then no call-back, and the other firm didn't even offer me a screening interview. I get to keep the scholarships either way, so no worries.

I'd say the statement about Asians being recruited just as heavily is accurate.

Puerto Ricans count as URM?

AA female, MVPB, top 1/3, secondary journal
Screening interviews: 22 (mix of oci and a diversity fair...DO NOT SKIP DIVERSITY FAIRS)
Callbacks: 11, went on 9, declined 2
Offers: 6 (1 V5, 1 V10, the rest sprinkled throughout the V25 - V100 range)

My job search went pretty well but other AA students at my school have not had the same luck. I think it's less of a boost than people think. IMO personality and grades have way more impact. Just my experience/judging from friends' experiences.

x1,000,000. If you're a URM, don't buy into the hype and factor that into your law school decision.

I'd say that you should do the same calculus anybody else does when considering whether law school is a financially prudent decision as opposed to assuming that your chances at biglaw or anything approach 100%.
