usually 8 if you're good as in you bill much more than your peers during the years you come up for review and you're able to bring in clients or secure existing clients.
otherwise you'll probably be forced out before you reach year 8

if you work for a big law firm usually you'll have many headhunters calling you offering you jobs at other firms. So you'll have stuff lined up. People who did leave usually left voluntarily cause they knew they weren't on the partner track. at least that was the case before the mass layoffs.
now you'll probably just get laid off cause firms don't give a shit.

160k to mid 200k's, i think
+ bonuses that range from 0 (at least in this economy) to 160k+ (at wachtell in a good economy)
williams connolly starts at 180k but no bonuses, i think

With less education to boot.
And for the same grueling work schedule, but perhaps a more laid back environment because no one is trying to make partner (maybe they call partners: senior bankers?) I don't know why I bothered anonying this post,
