Completely unacceptable?

It was the first callback I got, so I took it because it was a good firm and I didn't know what my process would be like.

Now I have multiple CBs in my target market, and 1 in another market I would like to live in.

The firm is simply in an area I don't want to end up in after law school, and isn't known for having a great work/life balance.

EDIT: Any tips on how to word the email would be appreciated.

Its totally acceptable, and even warranted, if you wouldn't work there anyway. Call, don't email. E-mailing for cancelling a callback is tacky and shows disrespect.

Definitely call instead of e-mail. You might also consider sending a follow-up letter.

Agreed. ITE, unless you have a LOT of CB's scheduled, it's hard to turn down any until you have an offer in hand...

Recruting departments responded to e-mails within a couple of hours. I don't see why calling is better than e-mailing for what is essentially a rejection letter. After all, the firms don't call you for rejections.

Canceling is fine, but are you sure you want to do it so long as you don't have an offer in hand?

Individuals are probably only canceling a few interviews. Firms have to reject dozens of people.

OP here - I did it, and don't regret it. Even if all my other CBs are fruitless.
