i'm a slim guy. i wear slim fitting suits with narrow lapels. I keep my ties between 3 and 3.25 inches. Under no circumstances, no matter how thin you are, should you go below 3 inches. you'll look like an ass

For suits it is all about fit. I'd rather get a suit that fits perfectly from Target than a slightly bulkier one from Brooks Bros.

I picked up a Calvin Klein slim fit today that looks basically like this:



Thoughts on the color? This kind of grey looks better on me than charcoal, I think.

It was $500 for both, total. I had to pay another $150 to get them altered, because the modern trend in suits means I have to buy bigger pants so they don't look like bicycle pants on me, which in turn means the jackets have to be taken in. Pain in the ass. But otherwise I look like I am wearing tights. But still - two big-name suits for that much? Too good a deal to pass on.

The only one I am nervous about is the Burberry. It's navy blue with thin white close-togther pinstripes. It's not like pimp blue, but it's a little bold. Only a little, though. It's English so it is incapable of being too bold. The Boss is a super dark blue, almost black.

If that's the color than I'm pretty sure I've got the same suit. Make sure you get the waist suppressed as that jacket is cut very straight. Other than that, i've loved the color since I got it.

If anyone needs tailoring, I would suggest finding an old italian tailor. I found one and he does an amazing job, made my 100 dollar suit look great, and only charged 20 dollars for a solid amount of work.

as far as brown shoes, is gray (light gray?) the only suit color that would really work?

Also, does belt color need to match? I don't mean match as just that it's some sort of brown belt, but does it really need the same color and gloss as the leather of the shoes?

Navy suits looks great with brown shoes. Just make sure not to wear them in an interview. Yes, your belt should match. If it doesn't you look sloppy. Get a matching belt from the company you bought the shoes from.

You can add evening events (fashion shows, formal dinners, theatre, etc.) to that list and you'll be pretty close, IMO.

Someplace in the middle of this thread we argued this out already. Here's the summary: A majority of people wouldn't notice if you wore a black suit. Some fashion-forwards wear black for day/business deliberately, and would notice. A much larger group would also notice, and would think it gauche. Generally, the rule is black is not for business, and as long as you're at the bottom of the totem pole, it's a good rule for you.

There are lots of suits that work with brown shoes. Light gray, charcoal (w/ a cream shirt and the right tie), navy, tan, brown glenplaid, etc. Of course most of those suits are not kosher in a white-shoe firm, but it's fun to switch it up if you work in a less formal environment.
