Good luck to all Army Active Duty and Intern applicants! The Board begins today! According to my JARO sources we should get our results in the beginning of January. Maybe we can all keep our fingers crossed that we will know by the holidays.

Yeah, I saw the ABA interpretation and saw that my school just does not have that option. Good luck to ya, whenever you apply!

Edit: Good luck to everyone who applied for the Army board!

I know this may have been asked previously but there's just been so many posts regarding JAG programs.

Does being a part time student affect one's eligibility for the AF GLP Program? Or is being a full time student required?

Thanks.

The application materials do not explicitly say one way or the other:

I recommend calling 1-800-JAG-USAF and get the official word.

I'm looking to apply this spring for Navy JAG (2L) and wanted to know what, if any, to focus on to enhance my chances..
I've been on the DA track until now, trial ad, evidence, crim pro, etc, and mock trial programs with a DA internship under my belt and the local U.S. Attorneys office. I think I have a good story and motivation (grandfather was navy man, passed away this past summer and motivated me) Im near the top third of a lower T2 and I keep myself fit.

What am I missing? Is the rest pure chance?

I was an Army 1L intern and an Air Force 2L intern (I actually interned with the AF for my entire second year of law school). So, I have spoken with many current JAGs and have even taken part in going through application packages for the Air Force while I interned there.

If anyone wants any advice, or has any questions about my Army or Air Force experiences (b/c believe me, the two are quitteeee different), please feel free to contact me.

Welcome Max. Hope you stick around. Just to respond to your post, I would challenge the implication that this board tries to reduce it all to a formula that guarantees success. Most of us are keenly aware of the horrendous selection rates. We're just trying to do our best to maximize our chances.

Question time: does anyone have knowledge of success getting a 1L internship outside of those officially offered? The Navy is the only one offering a program this summer. I'm guessing it will be more competitive since the Army cancelled their 1L summer internship. Would it be inappropriate to send a resume/cover letter to some places in the area where JAGs work and see if they would take me for the summer in some 'less official' capacity? Or to call them up and ask the same?

I think I remember reading that someone was able to do something like that in this thread, but can't say for sure. And not sure if I have time to read through it all again.

Thanks!

I've known people that did full-time legal internships at NG/Reserve units in their area, but you have to find an attorney working there full-time.

Army assignment locations are out for 187th JAOBC. Japan is on here. Very cool.

What are the options for locations? Is the list posted anywhere? It'd be interesting to get an idea of the typical locations.

I can tell you from first-hand experience that any selection board, esp for the USAF JAGC, will not have a quota to fill for geographical location, minority status, or gender. These boards are not fixed, board members do not pre-select before convening or reading a file. Competition is keen right now, and there is a limited number of positions available for each board, but you shouldn't forget about it if you just are now considering it your third year of school. Board members will looks at grades, experience, leadership qualities, and commitment to service. You should have an interest in litigation and deploying. They will consider your motivation to join the Corps (is it b/c you can't find a job elsewhere or do you have a real interest in serving?).

100% agreed with Million re: Air Force JAG.

Some good points from MaxBall above but, like Million here, have to disagree regarding any quotas, be they regional or ethnic. I have never heard regional quotas coming up as a consideration and no formal process for URM applications, though diversity is a factor considered.

Additionally, while I agree that some students grossly underestimate how competitive selection is, I would encourage any potential applicant, be they 2L, 3L, or graduate. It is never too late to put an application forward (unless of course, you are over 35).

Bragg has a big bold asterisk next to it. Any idea what that means?

edit: [nevermind. maybe i should read the whole page. JAs at Bragg will be expected to compete for airborne school.]

Thanks! Looks like an interesting list with a lot of international options.

Was it just listed as Europe, Hawaii, or broken down like Hawaii: Ft. Shafter/Schofield Barracks?

I'm applying for the December board. Does anyone know how long it takes for the results to come out?

January I think - that was my experience anyway.

You know there's a facebook page where you can read updates and post questions that JARO people will answer. Search " Army Judge Advocate Recruiting Office (JARO) " Not that TLS isn't 110% accurate but.

Sorry, I meant to specify that I'm applying for the Air Force JAG. I did look on their Facebook site, but I'm interested to know what experiences people have actually had in being notified. Will I have to wait until January to hear from the December board?

For Air Force JAG I heard back in 3 weeks from the October board. The December board may take longer because of the holidays.

Looking on another forum, it seems initial results dropped on the 21st of December last year, and people were receiving rejection letters by the 28th. So those selected were likely called just before Christmas.
