What is your current salary?

How do you answer this question during an interview when trying to lateral? Almost every interview I’ve been on an employer will ask how much I’m making at my current firm.

Thank you.

idk if this is the correct approach, but when trying to lateral from a firm that had some pretty intense salary compression for mid level/senior associates in a secondary market, I included bonus in my comp so they didn't try and low ball me. It got me in the range of what the market Cravath scale was, so it just looked like I was being paid less bc of the secondary market, not just because my firm was cheap. if you're not in big law, they'll expect that you're being paid lower, and they'll understand that's part of the lateral process (hopefully...)

I’m assuming you’re not interviewing with a lockstep biglaw firm since the question would otherwise be irrelevant.

I interviewed with a black box firm and when they asked the question, I gave them a general range (i.e. 190-210). They offered me just above the high end of the range I provided, which was fine because I made closer to the bottom end of the range before.

Isn’t asking current salary outlawed in a lot of states now?
