My guess is that it’s doubtful that’ll happen until at least November 8 when interviews are over

One of the divisions I interviewed with just disappeared from the status tracker. It’s one that has finished interviews.

I guess I should now- it’s DEA. Status tracker just updated, and I’m a finalist! Other division I interviewed with disappeared; I assume it’ll reappear if I get designated a finalist there.

Congrats! Does finalist mean that you got a secure offer or is there a possibility that you are an alternate?

Could be an alternate. I think the next step is getting a call with an offer (or not).

Yes, I interviewed with them. Probably can’t be much help though. Each judge selected and interviewed different people.

Cool! which judge did you interview with?

From Deana -

Hi, all:

We are getting into the time where components start identifying finalists. Just as a reminder, "Finalist" status includes candidates who are identified as offer recipients, including alternates.

When my office receives notice of finalist selections, we update the Avue status for that candidate. At that point, the codes components that selected a candidate for interview(s) drop off and are replaced by the codes for the component(s) that identify the candidate as one of their finalists.

If you interviewed with more than one component/office/branch/location, it is possible that more than one will select you as a finalist, or that more than one will issue an offer. But the timing of selection is at the discretion of the hiring component.

You may see one component code early, with later codes following, provided additional offices select you. We ask components to designate finalists before Thanksgiving, but they may do so at any time, and some will do so early on a case-by-case basis. That means that a component initially may identify one or more of its finalists, with a complete list coming later.

Now the less pleasant part of this news: if your status does not change to "finalist," before Thanksgiving then, at that point in time, none of the components with you interviewed have identified you as a possible offer candidate. We do NOT immediately notify non-finalists because we have to wait for each hiring office to report that their selections are final - and they do that at a time of their discretion.

Please bear in mind that offers will not be issued until after reference checks are complete. Some components are already actively engaged in reference checks, which may impact on the decision to designate a candidate as a finalist. Other components designate finalists, then defer finalizing the offers until reference checks are complete. Again, this is a matter of component discretion.

We recognize how anxious most of you must be, and will do our best to keep communications up to date and hiring status transparent.

Please also note that the Department follows the NALP guidelines regarding the timing of offers and response deadlines.

General guidance on timing of offers and response deadlines:

OFFERS TO CURRENT LAW STUDENTS:
o Offers to current law students issued prior to December 15 must remain open for 28 days or until December 30th, whichever comes first.
- When issuing an offer, the hiring office can request that candidates reaffirm their offer within 14 days from the date of the offer.
- Hiring offices that have requested this reaffirmation may retract any offer that is not reaffirmed within the 14-day period.

o Offers to current law students made after December 15 should remain open for at least two weeks.

OFFERS TO LAW SCHOOL GRADUATES:
o Offers to law school graduates should remain open for two weeks.

GENERAL INFORMATION APPLICABLE TO ALL OFFERS
o Components have the discretion to extend the response period.
o Generally, components provide basic salary information to applicants as a part of the oral offer.
- HP salary guidance is posted at https://www.justice.gov/legal-careers/a ... d-benefits.
- SLIP salary guidance is at https://www.justice.gov/legal-careers/s ... n-benefits.

I hope this information is helpful and wish you all the very best. As components identify finalists, I'll post updates on this message board.

Got my references checked for OCIJ (interview a week or two ago in LA)... but no update on status (and no email from Deana about switching to finalist status around Thanksgiving)... should I be worried?

Also curious to see where other OCIJ candidates ranked and how many places they put down?

FYI The message from Deana wasn’t sent it an email. It’s found in the community tab on Avue
