LLM in Tax or MAcc

Postby Anonymous User » Sat Feb 10, 2018 8:33 pm

I am starting at an Attorney Generals Office in the Midwest this fall after I graduate from T60. I want to be able to stay flexible in my future career and keep my exit options as wide open as possible (fed gov, in house, boutique law firm, solo practitioner, etc.).

I am considering getting either an LLM in Tax or a Masters in Accountancy (allowing me to sit for the CPA exam in some states). Which would be the best option given my (admittedly vague) goal?

It depends what sort of job you'd like to end up in. If you are looking to practice tax at a law firm, the LLM will be more beneficial than having a CPA. The CPA would probably be more helpful if you are looking to join a CPA firm or corporate tax department. As a solo, you are probably better off with a CPA, as it's fairly rare for an individual or small business to experience genuinely complex tax legal issues, but it's common for small businesses and individuals to need accounting help. Does your state have a work requirement for the CPA exam or is there likelihood of moving to such a state?

One concern I'd have based on your background description is that you don't seem to be starting your career in tax. Are you thinking of a brief stay at the AGs office? If so, why?
