Any suggestions to put for references (firm asked for a call-back) when you don't want to list a former employer? I'm interviewing for a Big Law job and my former Big Law employer likely figures that I am applying elsewhere, but I feel uncomfortable putting someone down... Should I suck it up and reach out to someone I vaguely trust from the old firm to not tell anyone within hiring and recruiting (since I still did apply there) or should I just find someone else?

I'll be the counterpoint to all the people saying yes here.

First of all, of course, if you want a 1L SA job and the only opportunity cost is the time spent doing the apps, by all means, send the apps.

That said: I was almost in the same situation as you. Got into a MVPD based on strong LSAT and great softs, I had a 3.4 GPA from a state school in undergrad. Applied to tons of 1L SA positions with a good cover letter. Got a few screeners in a secondary market (Indianapolis) and primary (DC/Chi), did mostly well and they said to get in touch when grades came out.

Grades came out (very late, like mid-January). My lowest grade was a 3.9. Forwarded grades along to everyone. Four firms called me back, and the message was summed up by one of them who literally said the words: "[Your school] screwed you with grades coming out this late, we would have obviously hired you with these grades but we're full." Two firms asked me "so.... what's with these two GPAs?" Everyone said to reapply next year, etc., and to call them if I still wanted to work there.

Everything worked out for me wonderfully (putting in my plug to be an RA here) but the lesson is: there's a "point" to applying (you might get lucky, you are laying groundwork for the next year, etc.), but be ready to be frustrated!
If this happens to me I will transfer based solely on principle, particularly because I am targeting Texas, which moves on a fast timeline. Don't advertise yourself as a national school if you are screwing my chances to go somewhere other than the Midwest.
Chill dude- UChicago 1L grades don't come out until mid-late January, and we send SAs to Texas every year.
Not at UChicago, dude.
Not saying you are, just that UChicago is the slowest of the slow, and TX firms still wait to hear back. I know some SAs actually interviewed prior to getting grades, then sent in good ones and pretty much immediately got offers. As long as you have the apps in, grade timing shouldn't be an issue.

Dude :)

How is everyone going about updating with grades for firms that required applications through online portals that don't make themselves obviously capable of being edited? For a few applications, I never received email confirmations from an automated system or anything. Thanks for any help!

Just find the recruiter for that specific office from NALP and email your grades to them.

Sorry if this is an obvious question:

I got an offer an will be withdrawing from all of my other mass mail apps. What's the protocol for updating firms that never got back to me? Should I still send them a formal application withdrawal email or will this just annoy them? I thought the former, but wanted to double check.

I don't think it's necessary unless you've done a callback/initial interview with them (at least I didn't withdraw my 100+ outstanding apps). If they get back to you, just tell them you've already accepted an offer.

Would taking a 1L SA in my (T20) school's market harm my chances at OCI for NY (home market)? I don't want to pass up an SA as a 1L, but I also don't want to appear questionable about where I eventually want to end up. Are ties (and grades, of course) enough, or should I hold out for something else (probably judicial externship or small/mid-size firm) in NY?

I never formally withdrew from the firms that ghosted me, and if I heard from them later I told them thanks but I'd already accepted an offer elsewhere.

Take the SA, especially since the target is NYC which is not ties-centric.

i accidently applied to a firm in a secondary market with a cover letter for a firm in chi. the recruiting administrator sent me a nasty rejection email "I'm not sure why you applied to our firm when you're interested in blank firm" I made a careless mistake but that email was bush league and unnecessary.

Yeah this is obviously an overreaction. I did have an interviewer at a well known boutique firm tell me that someone else from my school had applied with a cover letter saying they wanted to work in a practice are that was not even remotely close to what the firm does.

How do you handle applying to multiple offices of the same law firm? Say I want to apply to DC, LA, and NY? Should i email my entire app package to the specific recruiting manager for each office? Do I include in my cover letter that I am also applying to the other offices, or just do 1 cover letter that lists all 3?

I would avoid applying to multiple offices when possible, especially three markets that are very different. I picked one to apply to unless the firm explicitly says to list all offices you're interested in.

Dinged by Finnegan, probably applied 3 weeks ago.

Patent agent, T1 school in one of their main offices’s markets, so that kinda sucks, but such is life. Never even sent in grades yet, but i think I sent in a UG transcript with a GPA in the low 3s so maybe that’s it.
