Dear TLS,
I have already accepted an offer to return from my 2L summer job, but I am looking to apply to another firm in a different market as my circumstances have changed last minute. I plan on indicating that I had a summer associate position and received an offer to return, but I worry that a prospective employer will call my 2L summer firm if/when they decide to interview me. I still want to keep my 2L summer firm as a backup while looking for another job in a market that is more convenient to my personal circumstances. Is it actually likely that the firm will call 2L summer program to make sure I got an offer, or is that unlikely until the very end of the hiring process?

I had exact same situation/question. Generally, TLS will say no, the 3L firm will not call the 2L firm to confirm unless the 3L firm is about to make you an offer.

Usually firms will ask you before they call your references, right? So you will know and won’t be blindsided.
