NY Offices, Digs & Vanity

Postby Anonymous User » Tue Sep 12, 2017 5:22 pm

Surprisingly difficult to find information on this...What is the office situation like at the various NY firms? I heard through the grapevine that Weil has first and second years sharing internal offices and then has them moved to external (but still shared) offices. I know Skadden has shared external offices for a few months but then most first years have solo external offices. What's it like elsewhere?

**
Cleary: Shared external offices, then solo external offices after 6-9 months, then double-window external office after 2-3 years
Cravath: Shared external offices, then solo external offices after 2 years
DPW: Shared external offices, then solo external offices after 3 years
Paul Weiss: Shared external or internal offices, then solo internal office after 1 year, then solo external office after 2 years
Skadden: Shared external offices, then solo external offices after 3-6 months (one window), then double-window external office after 2-3 years
STB: Share external offices, then solo internal offices after 2 years
Stroock: Shared external offices, then solo external offices after 2 years
S&C: Shared external offices, then solo external offices after 3 years

On this: anyone have insight re S&C? Also, any thoughts on nicest/most affordable neighborhood with quick commute (i.e. 30 mins or less) to FiDi?

Cleary: Shared external offices for 9-12 months, then you get your own external.

Associates at S&C share external offices until sometime during their third year. Yes, it sucks.

ETA: A lot of us live in downtown Brooklyn (or a bit south or west of downtown Brooklyn).

Paul Weiss has shared internals

STB I think has shared internals... my 1st year interviewer wanted to interview me at a place not in his office (perhaps recruiting encouraged this?).

Do Clearly and S&C have no internal offices for att'ys? Curious how big the office windows are at the firms... the ones I saw in callbacks (Weil, PW, STB) were like tiny prison cell windows.

Pretty psyched to see Milbank's new digs at Hudson Yards once they are finished.

Cleary: shared external office 1st year, one-window external office until 2nd or 3rd year, and then two-window external office.

S&C has only external offices for attorneys and the windows are big. I'd rather have a prison cell window than share an office though, to be honest.

Pw has shared internals and externals first year, solo internal second year, and solo external beginning third year. Also don't get the prison cell vibe but whatever.

Makes me thankful (as if I need more reasons) that I don't work in NYC.

I thoroughly enjoy my exterior office with floor to ceiling windows with an unobstructed view of the entire south end of the city.

Same (or worse) at DPW. At least in the groups I've sat with/near.

At Cravath you share an external office first 2 years then get your own external office. There are no internal offices for attorneys.

In reality, many people get a two-person office to themselves 12-18 months in, then have to share it with a summer associate the second summer, before getting a real one-person office around your two-year anniversary.

Edited for clarity.

It's weird how people always say thank God I don't live in New York in these threads. No one is ever going into threads about Texas firms and saying how gleeful they are not to live in Dallas.

I didn't mind sharing an office as a junior. Someone right there to ask stupid questions to without having to ask an associate youre working with.

That's what I meant to say. The fact that so many people feel the need to comment that they are glad that they don't live in NY is probably indicative that lots of people love living in NY.

How's it feel to look at those 5 buildings and the interstate?

I'd take LA with a temporary bout of a bacterial VD over living in Dallas.

That's what I got at Stroock.

I actually didn't mind sharing that much, but I was friends with my officemate before we even started. It was nice to have someone to commiserate to or ask questions of. Sharing with the summer wasn't bad, as it was a way to get to know them before they started permanently. I can imagine a bad roommate situation occurring, which would make things considerably less pleasant. Personally, the window was absolutely key- I did the DOJ summer program where many attorneys had internal offices- drove me bonkers and that was only a 9-5.

Because the terribleness of NYC is unmatched, and its fun to poke (harmless) fun at life in the big apple. (And yes, I have lived there - it fucking blows.)

It has its ups and downs. I'm glad I lived there for a while- wouldn't want to move back- especially not with kids. If I were a billionaire, I'd probably have a place in the West Village I could helicopter into when I was in the mood.

Why helicopter like poor people when you can teleport, bruh?
