HOUSTON

Post by KijiStewart » Sun Aug 13, 2017 3:34 pm

Got some Houston interviews coming up.

Anything else I need to know about it besides its a booming city with a large inflow of young entrepreneurs from across the country that is easier city to break into than the more parochial Tx metropoles? ,

I don't want to get carried away with how awesome I think it is because one Houston interviewer said ok now shut up (was deep down thinking I know you're just here for the $$... )

Don't be the one to bring it up. You should be fine.

Don't forget how much you love the oil-and-gas industry.

It's been a mild summer but it's August so it is hot as hell right now. You're allowed to mention it, and if your interviewer complains you're allowed to agree. It's not a trick

I guess you're joking but don't say it's a booming city with a large inflow of entrepreneurs. Also is that even true?

Side note, I will be in Houston a decent amount in the next few weeks for callbacks. Downtown was dead tonight.

1) Where are the awesome barbecue and texmex places?

2) Where are the fun people?

1.
BBQ: The Pit Room, Killens.
Tex-Mex: Too many to list. For fancy tacos, don't miss Torchy's or Tacodeli. For classic authentic Tex-Mex, try El Tiempo, Ninfa's or Teotihuacan.

2.
It's August in Houston. The fun people are inside their homes. But for real, PM me and I can give you tips based on what kind of fun you're into.

Edit: Don't sleep on the Asian food scene. Mala Sichuan (with two locations, one in Chinatown (far) and one in Montrose (close)) is up for a James Beard Award, and Himalaya might be the best South Asian food in the U.S.

Just be genuine about what you like about Texas and Houston. It's not hard to find something. Houston is the most diverse city in the country, energy is the lifeblood of the global economy, Houston has an amazing culinary scene, etc. etc.

The Rockets will be contenders with CP3, and you think JJ Watt hung the moon. Feel free to PM me for food/nightlife recs as well. Downtown is not the place to be for the hopping bar scene.

Yeah I was staying downtown on a weekend earlier in the summer for an interview and when time for dinner rolled around I thought I'd just go walk down the street until I found somewhere to eat (that usually works in other cities). It was about 6:30 or 7:00 PM on a Sunday evening but I walked for blocks and blocks and nothing was open. Even chain fast food places like Jimmy Johns apparently don't bother opening on Sunday in downtown Houston. There were no people. No cars. I was just walking down deserted blocks of office buildings. It was the weirdest experience..

Downtown houston pretty much sucks tbh. Funny thing is people there will say it's so much better than it used to be...

Fun areas are Midtown, Montrose, Washington Ave, the Heights. Ray's and Triple J also have really good bbq.

Downtown isn't great but Okra is usually good, I like Bad News Bar a lot, and there's others. it really isn't terrible for drinks after work but i wouldn't go there on a weekend

Pretty much this, north Main is decent after work, but its not the happening part of the city by far. And the statement that it is better than it used to be is completely legit. Problem is, starting from a negative, a huge improvement (which objectively has happened) will still not turn an area good.
