please dont burn the associate and please don't think the associate knows more than the partner. although they may, sometimes they don't and it makes you look dumb and youll be glad you didn't tell a partner they are basically wrong/dumb.

Stopped reading when assumptions about OP were being made. For what it's worth, it's never a good idea to say anything critical about your employer. That includes past employers when interviewing for new positions. This topic is like politics on facebook. It's fine to have a strong opinion but a terrible idea to voice it openly and antagonistically. You aren't going change any quality of the firm, so you might as well try to find something else while keeping this option open. You should definitely make clear to the firm that you have an interest in a particular group, but perhaps you would be a better fit for a firm with more of a free market assignment system from the get-go.
