Priorities: (1) Litigation (only) (2) Location (Chi, DC, will bid some NYC for safety), (3) Culture (just started a family, though I'm willing to work at a sweatshop for 3-4 yrs and bail for AUSA etc.), (4) [bonus] some connection to government. I'm thinking places like Jones Day, Gibson Dunn, Covington, Jenner...

Any tips on bid list? Any firms below that I should prioritize, or ones I can safely cross off?

Very interested:
Sidley Austin LLP
Jones Day
Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP
Sullivan & Cromwell LLP
Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP
Latham & Watkins LLP
WilmerHale
Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP
Kirkland & Ellis LLP
Paul Hastings LLP
Baker McKenzie
Williams & Connolly LLP
Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP and Affiliates
Covington & Burling LLP
Jenner & Block LLP
O'Melveny & Myers LLP

Somewhat interested:
Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP
Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP
Ropes & Gray LLP
Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP
Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz
Barack Ferrazzano Kirschbaum & Nagelberg LLP
Hogan Lovells US LLP
Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, LLP
Simpson Thacher & Bartlet LLP
Winston & Strawn LLP
Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP
Steptoe & Johnson LLP
Boies, Schiller & Flexner LLP
Shook, Hardy & Bacon LLP
Debevoise & Plimpton LLP
Mayer Brown LLP
White & Case
DLA Piper
Dentons US LLP
Bryan Cave
Holland & Hart LLP
Faegre Baker Daniels LLP
Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP
Bid your top Chicago picks first, all top 5 for sure - something like Sidley, Kirkland, Latham, Skadden, Baker (although I think this actually goes super high because they don't have as high a grade cutoff as the other four, so maybe put them #1) then after that go for the New York ones you like such as Cravath, Weil, PW, and SullCrom. D.C. isn't popular at Northwestern so you could probably score interviews there if you put them in late.
Another question: I'm interested in a couple of firms (Kirkland, Sidley) that are big in DC & Chicago. I prefer DC as a market, but these firms have bigger litigation departments in Chicago. Technically on Symplicity I can bid for Chicago & DC separately. Should I try to get separate interviews for each office? If not, is it unwise to mention that I'm interested in both markets?
So far my bidlist is:

1 Baker & McKenzie LLP (Chi)
2 Sidley Austin LLP (Chi)
3 Latham & Watkins LLP (Chi)
4 Kirkland & Ellis LLP (Chi)
5 Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP and Affiliates (Chi)
6 Mayer Brown LLP (Chi)
7 Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP (NYC)
8 Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP (NYC)
9 Sullivan & Cromwell LLP (NYC)
10 Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP (NYC)
11 Paul Hastings LLP (NYC)
12 Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz ()
13 Jones Day (DC)
14 WilmerHale (DC)
15 Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP (DC)
16 Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP (DC)
17 Covington & Burling LLP (DC)
18 Baker Botts LLP (DC)
19 Jenner & Block LLP (DC)
20 Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP ()
21 O'Melveny & Myers LLP (DC)
22 Williams & Connolly LLP (DC)
23 Shook, Hardy & Bacon LLP (Chi)
24 Bryan Cave (Den)
25 Faegre Baker Daniels LLP (Den)
26 Holland & Hart LLP (Den)
27 Barack Ferrazzano Kirschbaum & Nagelberg LLP (Chi)
I had virtually the same GPA, same secondary market, same interest in litigation, and same bidlist. This list looks spot on, more or less. I would consider moving SulCrom and Cravath down a bit, and move a few of the DC firms up two or so spots, given your interest in DC. In general I think this list could get you 20 screeners. Good job. Also, don't forget to hustle outside of OCI. A few firms - Cleary DC, Weil Dallas, to name a few - are known to give offers pre-OCI, from my experience.

Very preliminary list, but thinking of cutting out one or two of the "elite" firms to make room for more of the work-life balance firms.

1 SKADDEN - 60
2 SIDLEY AUSTIN - 80
3 JENNER & BLOCK - 60
4 WINSTON & STRAWN - 60
5 MAYER BROWN - 20
6 FOLEY - 20
7 ROPES & GRAY - 20
8 KIRKLAND & ELLIS - 80
9 LATHAM & WATKINS - 60
10 MCDERMOTT WILL & EMERY - 80
11 EIMER STAHL - 20
12 JONES DAY - 40
13 MCGUIREWOODS - 20
14 DLA PIPER - 60
15 BAKER & MCKENZIE - 20
16 REED SMITH - 20
17 THOMPSON COBURN - 20
18 PAUL HASTINGS - 20
19 BRYAN CAVE LLP - 20
20 HOLLAND & KNIGHT LLP - 20
21 FOX ROTHSCHILD - 20
22 QUARLES & BRADY - 20
23 NIXON PEABODY - 20
24 SHOOK HARDY & BACON - 17
25 FAEGRE BAKER DANIELS - 20
26 STEPTOE & JOHNSON - 20
27 BANNER & WITCOFF - 11
28 MORGAN LEWIS & BOCKIUS - 20
29 SCHIFF HARDIN - 40
30 BARNES & THORNBURG - 9
This list is a little aggressive IMO. No way you'll get Bryan Cave at 19, surely (my opinion, of course). Same with Schiff at 29. Move Sidley down at least 3 spots, and def move Mayer and Foley up 1 or 2 at least. Baker Mckenzie definitely needs to get moved up at least 3, if history is any guide. The general thing to keep in mind is that everyone at or around median will be bidding firms like Mayer, Foley, Baker, Shook Harden, etc., like hot cakes.

And your note re: culture. You'll have no idea about firm culture until your callback, and probably not until you summer. So you might as well go for the most prestigious, unless Kirkland's free market scares you, etc.

Wouldn't bother with Latham unless you have a superstar personality, great work experience, cured cancer, etc. But that's not because you're only .01 away from their cutoff -- Latham is picky AF and is known to not give callbacks to people even with ~4.0 and LR. Cleary, Skadden are reaches, but you won't get an offer if you don't try. If you like risk, bid 'em high.

Quick Q - for firms that allow multiple interviews, can I bid for multiple offices? would they actually extend cbs respectively?

Yes and yes. Some ppl don't bid/interview in multiple offices though, out of a fear that it will show a lack of commitment to one market.

This is surprising to me and I would discount this if considering the NYC office. Not saying that you are guaranteed a CB at Latham NYC but it's worth an interview if you can get it.

What kind of transactional? Cahill pretty much only does high-yield debt work and is by all accounts and awful place to work. I found it odd that they would be your #1 even if you're doing if because of interview spots/GPA data. You should look at the Chambers bands get a better idea of the relative strength of these firms transactional practices. I know you just want a job but at 3.51 and NY you should get something if you're an average interviewer.

I haven't seen the GPA data in a while, but I think you should have Weil, Latham NY, Kirkland NY, Sidley NY, Wilkie, and Shearman way higher. From my recollection, you should be competitive for all of them and they all have better transactional practices than the rest of your top 15.

Why is Clark Hill on there at all? Or Quarles?
+1. Bolded is good advice. Take a close look at the large NYC firms and their SA class sizes.

Ok, here's an amended list, with a new format: [Bid #] [Firm Name] ([City])(["estimated 2L slots"])([average GPA for cb]). There are duplicates for firms that allow you to bid on multiple cities.

1 Baker McKenzie (Chi)(20)
2 Sidley Austin LLP (Chi)(80)
3 Latham & Watkins LLP (Chi)(60)
4 Kirkland & Ellis LLP (Chi)(80)
5 Jones Day (Chi)(40)
6 Jenner & Block LLP (Chi)(60)
7 Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP and Affiliates (Chi)(60)
8 Mayer Brown LLP (Chi)(60 (20 lit., 40 transact.))
9 Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP (NYC)(60)
10 Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP and Affiliates (NYC)(20)
11 Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP (NYC)(40)
12 Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP (NYC)(40)
13 Sullivan & Cromwell LLP (NYC)(40)
14 Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP (NYC)(40)
15 Jenner & Block LLP (NYC)(20)
16 Paul Hastings LLP (NYC)(20)
17 Sidley Austin LLP (DC)(20)
18 Jones Day (DC)(20)
19 WilmerHale (DC)(20)
20 Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP (DC)(20)
21 Covington & Burling LLP (DC)(20)
22 Baker Botts LLP (DC)(20)
23 Latham & Watkins LLP (DC)(20)
24 O'Melveny & Myers LLP (DC)(20)
25 Williams & Connolly LLP (DC)(20)
26 Shook, Hardy & Bacon LLP (Chi)(17)
27 Barack Ferrazzano Kirschbaum & Nagelberg LLP (Chi)(40)

Yeah you need to reorder this based on class sizes. Mayer Chi and Jones Day Chi probably need to be higher. Can you bid both offices for Skadden (same Q for Jenner)? If so, Skadden NY should be higher than Weil. You'll get Kirkland Chi and Sidley Chi with 80 interview spots if they're at like 5 and 6.

No McDermott Chi? No Davis Polk NY? No Debevoise NY? Davis Polk and Debevoise make more sense for your goals than some of the other NY firms.

Also, how much do you want to work at Baker & McKenzie? I had a high GPA at OCI and was essentially targeting the same markets. I dropped Baker because I figured I wouldn't work there other pretty much anything else in my top 20 so I could move up every other firm and tbh you're gonna get at least one offer unless you're really really weird.
I've addis Davis Polk. Debevoise isn't coming to OCI this year. Should I sent my materials to their recruiting coordinator? As for McDermott Chi, I know vault isn't everything but are they really that great? Healthcare & Tax seem to be their strong suit, and I want to do litigation...

Yes. You should be mass mailing any firm you would work for that isn't coming to OCI. Gibson Dunn probably fits into that category too. McDermott has a small litigation group compared to other Chicago firms, but if you would work there over any of the NY firms then you should bid it. Otherwise you're fine to leave it off if you're doing it purposely. I was bidding transactional with high grades and I dropped several Chicago firms from my bidlist to more safely bid V20 NY firms.

I am confused about how OCI works in conjunction with other programs (OTIP etc.)

If we have screeners lined up for OTIP, can we still bid on the same firm in a different location for OCI? Career services told me yes but I don't know if I should believe them. I keep hearing conflicting answers on this.

From what I understand, it depends if they say "no multiple interviews" on the symplicity page or not. If a firm says no multiple interviews, then you're gambling. Maybe they'll let you interview at OTIP and OCI, maybe they won't. This information is in the OCI procedures guide on careerspace by the way...

So I have gotten conflicting information about mass mailing. Should I mass mail to firms coming to OCI before I've found out I have an interview? Is it worth the risk that I piss them off? Or should I just mail to all the firms I'm interested in that are NOT coming to OCI?

Is there a benefit then to reaching out to the firm's recruiting dept. to make sure? I don't want to waste any of my bids here.

Feel free, but tbh if you're not getting a cb from the first screener than what are your chances the 2nd time around? Unless you're interviewing for different offices...

3.488 (I was the earlier poster that said 3.49, apologies if rounding up makes a difference in the Latham debate...)

Want transactional. I only have ties to CA (participating in OTIP so not using any OCI bids on CA.)

Where do I put Skadden NY (20 slots), if anywhere? Same with Jones Day NY. Also, are Dechert and Cadwalader sinking ships? They are safe firms for my GPA. I really didn't know what to put for the bottom half of my bid list so any and all input is appreciated.

1 Latham (20) NY
2 Milbank (40) NY
3 O'Melveny (20) NY
4 White & Case (20) NY
5 Arnold Porter Kaye Scholer (20) NY
6 Baker Botts (20) NY
7 Weil (60) NY
8 Willkie (40) NY
9 Sidley (20) NY
10 Fried Frank (40) NY
11 Wilmerhale (20) NY
12 Simpson Thacher (40) NY
13 Mayer Brown (transasctional) (40) Chicago

Want transactional. I only have ties to CA (participating in OTIP so not using any OCI bids on CA.)

Where do I put Skadden NY (20 slots), if anywhere? Same with Jones Day NY. Also, are Dechert and Cadwalader sinking ships? They are safe firms for my GPA. I really didn't know what to put for the bottom half of my bid list so any and all input is appreciated.

If you're interested in having interviews in Chicago you would want to move some of those Chicago firms ahead of the New York ones since they'll be the most popular and you'll still get NY interviews lower.

If I were to hear from Law Review or another journal at some point, how would I communicate that on my resume for mass mailing? Would I just put a line in activities saying, e.g. "Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology" or should it be "Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology (accepted offer)"?

Communicate now with those who not only know what a legal education is, but can offer you worthy advice and commentary as you complete the three most educational, yet challenging years of your law related post graduate life.

Mass mail every firm in your target cities that won't be at OCI. Do it now. It's not too late.

Just list it, they'll know you haven't done anything yet.

Yep, all those Chicago firms are wasted bids where you have them currently. Either move them to the top if you think you might want to stay in Chicago or leave them off entirely if you're pretty set on New York.

You guys are life savers, I'm glad I browsed TLS. How is this info not being told by career services? Why didn't I hear it from friends?
