Why can we not do this? It makes sense for everyone and incentivizes people to get degrees!

People need incentives to become plumbers and electricians, not to get degrees. Your "plan" will encourage more borrowing and drive up costs more. Also what about people who don't borrow? Can they pay out of pre-tax dollars too? May as well have meal payments taken out of pre-tax salary too because everyone has to eat, right! Also, isn't there already an interest deduction? Pretty dumb idea anon bro.

Agree. There is already enough incentive to get a degree.

I just wish the student loan interest deduction were in play for the biglawyer bigdebtors

or to bigdebtors in general.
I make just enough so I can pay down my sticker debt on a 15-20 year plan but have very little left over (poverty level). But the current deduction is a joke in my situation.
