Non-biglaw firms known for their Emerging Companies & VC group?

Postby Anonymous User » Sat Sep 17, 2016 1:06 pm

I know well-known firms in this area such as Fenwick, Wilson Sonsini, Cooley, etc.

I am looking for smaller or other firms such as WilmerHale. Can anyone let us know firms known for its Emerging Companies & VC group, regardless of the location. (SV, NY, Seattle, Chicago, etc)

Well there is Gunderson, definitely big law level work but certainly smaller people wise.

I don't know if Wilmerhale should be considered "smaller".

If you are talking about smaller (but still biglaw) EC practices, I would look at Goodwin Proctor too.

You do know that WilmerHale has like 1000 attorneys and is definitely big law, right?

The Boston-centric shops (Choate, Mintz, Foley Hoag, Nutter, etc.) are worth a look, but they are also probably "BigLaw." You could look at some of the smaller shops in Boston though.

Yep... Gesmer in Boston also is pretty small and does this type of work. If you are looking for non-biglaw, you should look at local sources of info like the local city bar association.

OP what size firm are you looking for because everything listed so far, outside Gesmer, is BigLaw.

Also, is this for looking for an SA or lateraling or what purpose? Because firms that get too small and specialized may not be an option if you don't already have a certain background.

Local sources but I imagine Chicago market is way smaller than Boston just because of fewer tech and start ups there.

Definitely true. Sidley Austin has a start up practice group, Winston has one too, but they're not too big and do more work with their SV offices. The only non-big law firm in Chicago that I know of that has a startup practice group is Horwood, Marcus and Berk. They're around 80 attys I think and I know they have an active startup practice group

OP here. The listed firms above look great and that is what I was looking for. Thank you guys.

I guess I am looking for both biglaws AND smaller firms (100ish lawyers).

Any ideas for the NY market?
