Lateraling from OC to LA

I'm posting anon b/c OC is small.

I'm an incoming first year, and while I like the firm I will be starting at (V100) I would prefer to move to LA b/c I hate Orange County.

When should I start applying? I would like to try out my current firm because I would feel bad moving immediately.

Again, I'm being intentionally ambiguous with my school/stats/firm reputation, but I'll say that I'm a strong "flyover district court" caliber candidate.

depends on your practice area. if you're in corp or something specialized you may be able to lateral as a first or 2nd year. if you're in lit good luck.

Did you know you hated OC when you accepted the offer? What is it that you hate about OC (the legal market, type of work, your firm, or the location itself)?

If you didn't want OC when you got the job but they stuck you there (from like an LA summer program), then how mad could they be about you lateraling? I think it'll be tough to lateral though before you've started working and are on the firm's website.

Yes I knew OC was a big shopping mall filled with unsavory people but I never hated it until I lived there. Life in the OC is not real. It is a bubble filled with naive conservative rich kids who have never ventured out past the 605 on the 405.

Your firm is not going to get mad and there is someone to replace you with hours notice. Trust me. Your firm will fire you one morning without notice for a reason or no reason. Dont act like you owe them anything. What are they gonna do? Hate you? No.

How about requesting a transfer to your firm's LA office (if they have one)?
