Some firms (probably relatively few) care. Some say they do but don't really. Many don't.
Conventional wisdom is to try to do well 2L in case you get no-offered after your SA summer, and then if all is in the clear feel free to 3LOL it up.

Pales in comparison to your performance as an SA. The odds of landing something through 3L OCI are very low for those who are no offered based on performance and those who struck out as a 2L. Every summer assignment, whether it's turning in a good memo on time or not falling asleep at a deposition, carries more weight than any 2L exam. You are likely better served strengthening your writing skills and social acumen than trying in school if your primary goal is professional success. You will invariably use the same skills on exams that you did as a 1L, and will learn almost nothing of practical significance.
