Is it appropriate to ask for a standing desk?
Who would you ask? Is it odd/best practice to offer to reimburse the firm for it?

I think it's fine as an associate. I wouldn't as a summer.

Also interested. I didn't as a SA but want to when I start full time. I also have back/spine issues and can get a reference from my neurosurgeon if necessary. I'll offer to reimburse.

It doesn't hut to ask. They've been around long enough that you can probably determine the firm's answer just by looking around and seeing what other people have.

Re: Is it appropriate to ask for a standing desk?
At my firm almost no one had a standing desk, and various associates brought up that they would like one but thought that it would be a very bad idea to get one. I don't know if this was paranoia or real concern or what.

I've interviewed recently with multiple associates who had standing desks paid for by the firm.

At my office a number of assocs (and one or two partners) have them or the varidesk thing. Firm has no problem with them, but you have to buy your own.

I would honestly just ask without offering to reimburse.

The firm I worked at (V5 NYC) wound up fucking flooded with them. It was funny, it caught on like wildfire among the juniors, and the firm handed them out like candy.

My V-10- handed out like candy too.
If you have spine issues, then ask and they pretty much have to accommodate without charging you -it's ADA thing.
If you want it just because, and are required/willing to reimburse, make sure you get one that can attach to the desk without ruining the desk.

When I worked in the federal government they were given out no questions asked because they were considered a reasonable accommodation for ADA purposes. The only downside to asking is I guess to some people you'd be considered "that guy."

Most people at my work have one, paid for by the firm. Had to get a doctors note though.

They aren't that expensive. If your firm won't buy one and you want one, just buy it.

What do you consider "not that expensive?" I was looking at the brands you linked in the other thread and didn't see anything under about $750.kalvano wrote:They aren't that expensive. If your firm won't buy one and you want one, just buy it.

I think the least expensive sit/stand I've seen is about $450, but that's a hand-crank one. For a motorized one, it's probably about $600 starting. If you want a nicer finish on the desk portion, or drawers / cutouts / speakers / cable management / embedded touchscreen with FitBit compatibility and exercise suggestions, then it will range anywhere from $850 to $4500.A. My firm will pay for one for anyone who asks and is able to show some sort of doctor's note that says it's useful to his/her health. So maybe ask to see if yours has a similar requirement?

Thanks. I can live without Fitbit integration, but still more than I'm willing to spend. But good to know.kalvano wrote:I think the least expensive sit/stand I've seen is about $450, but that's a hand-crank one. For a motorized one, it's probably about $600 starting. 2 hours of first-year time is pretty inexpensive in the grand scheme of things.A. Nony Mouse wrote:What do you consider "not that expensive?" Look up the varidesk. They're great and they start at around $300.

At my firm you just need a doctor's note saying that it would be medically helpful (not that you need a medical condition; just that a doctor thinks it would help you)
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
Now there's a charge.
