How to explain grade drop

Post by Anonymous User » Mon Jun 22, 2015 8:57 pm

Transferred to T14. Was at a TTT. Was at Top about 7 percent of my class after fall. Dropped to top 20% after spring. Will be interviewing with V10 and V20s at loyola patent fair. How do I explain the drop? I worked my ass off but I guess it just wasn't my semester.

How do I explain the drop?
You don't. 7% to 20% is not enormous. As an interviewer, I think I would mentally see you as a "Top 15-20% student" with those grades, and that's accurate. There's a temptation to see yourself as special because you tell yourself that you're "capable" of the highest grades, but the truth is, everyone in the top 1/5 of the class has a couple of outstanding grades.

Don't sweat it too much and do not try to explain your way out of it, is my advice.

Just to clarify: you dropped from top 7% to top 20% at your TTT, and you're going to be a 2L at a T14 in the Fall?

I hope you don't mind if I'm a little blunt: if you didn't have the BioChem/patent thing going on, you would be pretty fucked. The vast majority of big law firms are going to pass on a student who was only top 20% at a TTT as a 1L. It would be the overall class rank, not the grade drop, that would kill you. They'll think GULC shouldn't have admitted you.

BUT....you're BioChem. You've already got a 1L SA with an IP group. You're very likely fine.
