Don't make the mistake of thinking your grades will guarantee anything. You go to WUSTL, not the T14. Anyone can strike out with the right combination of bad luck and bad strategy. A significant chunk of people who end up going to big law will have exactly one offer. The line between going 0/20 and 1/20 at OCI is pretty thin.
Look, I'm not discounting the value of mass-mailing, but I think it is a technique least adapted to getting you a job. 500 is just extreme and seems necessarily geared to getting you in an awkward position of getting interviews at firms for which you have no interest in working. I mean-what kind of firms are you applying to at 500?? I'd rather not practice law than practice at some third-tier firm that pays little and slowly drains my soul over the next decades of my career. Again, people may be in a situation in which they have no other choice, but I think most law students would be much better off taking a more focused approach to job applications.
So don't mass mail, no one cares. But for other people looking for a firm job - you should be mailing every firm where you could imagine yourself working. It's easier to cancel interviews once you have an offer than to schedule them after it's too late.

Also I'm including multiple offices of the same firm that have different recruiters. Some would tell you not to do this, but I got a few interviews at firms I did that for. Caveat: if you want an insular market like St. Louis, probably just apply to the St Louis offices of Bryan Cave, Husch, etc (to be clear: still apply to tons of firms outside that city).

I'm not suggesting that you mass mail some 40 attorney ID shop in Tampa or something, but it's really not that hard to churn up 500 decent firms/offices with unique recruiters. The Am Law alone gives you 300 unique firms that I assure you all beat the hell out of unemployment.

Do employers actually understand our grading system? Say one has a 3.1 in a class. do employers realize that grade is basically the very bottom of the class?

I'm not sure what that number means, because most of the firms (including the NY/DC ones) still have slots available. Also, almost every Chicago firm still has interview slots available. Either they are going to be making some additional selections today (deadline is 20th) or they are not going to take the number they indicated on Symplicity.
It means that people are preselected for those slots but haven't scheduled. These are most likely people transferring, (and maybe people working abroad).

Its unclear what happens to those slots afterwards.
Those slots go to alternates....they just sent out notices for at least some of the firms because the slots are going away.

If there are any slots after that, then I'm not sure if they just leave them open or re-evaluate....my guess is between pre-selects and alternates there are rarely slots left.

If you were to have such a GPA, I'd advise dropping out. And yes, employers realize a 3.1 is a **** GPA. What kind of ridiculous question is that?

It's just a grade in one class, right? As long as the other grades are okay it may not matter too much. But, you need to have a really good answer prepared for why the grade was so low in that one class.

OP here. I was just wondering whether this looked like I "failed a class" versus a "random slightly below median grade" It's my lowest grade by like .4 so I was wondering the perception of employers.

If I had a situation where I couldn't transfer I would have dropped out.

I doubt employers will think this looks like you failed. Our grading scale is weird, and while employers who come to OCI get accustomed to it, I still don't think most employers realize how low a 3.1 is, and I doubt any would assume it is lower than it actually is. Part of the nature of the grading scale now is that it bunches grades together. A 0.4 difference from the rest of your grades doesn't look like some crazy outlier. That grade alone is unlikely to hold you back any more than its effect on your GPA (i.e. if your GPA is otherwise passable, people aren't likely to ding you for that grade).

I had a 3.2 and an otherwise solid GPA and in probably 40 interviews not one person brought it up. I talked to a friend that had a low LP grade brought up, but my low grade never was. If your GPA is otherwise competitive I doubt anyone will care too much.

Similar situation. I had a 3.2 in a first semester 1L class and it only hurt me to the extent that it dragged down my GPA. Never got brought up at OCI, and the only time it's ever been mentioned in an interview was a clerkship interview where the judge pulled out one of my LoRs and quoted where one of my professors essentially said the grade was bullshit and that professor sucks (in not so many words).

Different Anon here. Did the low LP grade torpedo his apps? I have north of a 3.7 but my two semester LP average is a 3.16 so I am slightly worried.

Also fuck LP...

Are you saying you have a 3.16 or slightly over a 3.7? Are you a rising 3L? I'm a bit confused here.

Employers will see your cumulative GPA first and foremost. Individual bad grades are unlikely to screw you (in addition to how much they drag down your cumulative GPA) unless they're actual Fs.

Rising 2L. Cumulative gpa is greater than a 3.7. I got a 3.28 one semester and a 3.04 in another semester for LP.

Oh I thought you meant Low Pass, which was confusing the hell out of me. I'm assuming your doctrinal grades are pretty good if you still have over a 3.7.

I'm guessing you're top 1/4? You're in a somewhat precarious position (particularly if not from St. Louis), but I don't think your LP grades will knock you over the edge. Mass-mail your butt off and hope for the best.

For OCI or an all-day consortium.....any advice or strategy on time of day for interviews?

Looking for advice, thoughts, strategy on....scheduling (early in the day vs. late)......should you approach an interview in the morning different than one in the late afternoon....etc.....

Depends. As a girl I always shoot for the afternoon slots because of all the time I have to spend to get interview ready. Scheduled my most wanted firm for the slot directly after lunch, when the interviewer just had a mental break and isn't hangry

So, we should be getting TX OCI and the beginnings of EIW today, right?
