Of course, that assumes the professor spends no time creating the class or prepping materials, keeping current on the material he/she teaches, meeting with students, creating and grading exams, working in committees at the school for things like long range planning, alumni relations, etc.

So this is stupid. Law professors at a lot of schools are generally overpaid but this particular analysis is whacked.

Adjuncts are typically paid by the credit hour, so the $2502 is probably for one class. Of course, a fair number of adjuncts (at least at top schools) are established professionals who like the exposure and don't really need the money itself.

True, it wasn't perfectly on point, but I couldn't think of the perfect universal analog in legal practice off the top of my head.

Yes, law professors are evaluated on their teaching evaluations, but most schools are actually more interested in research and writing. I would estimate that professors are expected to spend at most half of their time teaching (including prep, grading, meeting with students), at least half of their time or more writing and doing scholarly work, and about 15% of their time on committees, serving the law school and the University. Yes, I deliberately made that add up to more than 100%

Now, we could get into the argument of whether these expectations are equally realized for long-tenured versus on-the-tenure track faculty, but I actually think that might have happened already in a different thread specifically on tenure.

Not disagreeing with that, I've done my share of adjuncting. In my experience, there are two kinds of adjuncts: 1) adjuncts who like to spread knowledge and don't care about/don't need even "fair" wages to do so, and 2) adjuncts who are only taking the abysmal pay because they are desperately seeking a foothold into academia. Those in the latter category break my heart.

I bet it takes an average of 3 hours a week on top of the class time to teach that.
15 weeks?

and you're basically just reviewing the fundamental concepts of the shit you do all the time anyways.
pays an extra vacation and makes you feel like you're giving back. you also get to network with real profs so maybe you can get some experts or perhaps pick up some work too --some students will end up as in-house. seems like a good deal to me.

Given the right goals/circumstances, it can be a good deal. UT is a great school, and I wouldn't expect any of its adjuncts to be legitimately struggling. Other law schools probably have more exploitative situations, though.

Given the right goals/circumstances, it can be a good deal. UT is a great school, and I wouldn't expect any of its adjuncts to be legitimately struggling. Other law schools probably have more exploitative situations, though.

I thought it seemed low too at first impression but then worked out a bit. $5k per credit hour extrapolated to teaching two 3-credit classes for a full year works out to be 60k, which is 1/2 of what the Assistant Profs make. Not great, but not as raw a deal as I first thought.
