And is Hogan DC or NY? Hogan DC with your GPA is a big stretch, even if you have LR.

And generally yeah Nashville is top 10 or not at all, with the exception of Baker if they still have their usual 57 slots.
Does Hogan NY dip lower into the class than Hogan NY?

They're all ties-sensitive, but to what degree I don't know. Given you didn't get Bradley as a 1L, it will be difficult to get them as a 2L since they tend to hire back all their 1Ls and not take many, if any, new 2Ls. I would say Bass is your best bet, given their preference for high grades and LR and their large-ish class size.

Do your best to sell yourself to them re: Nashville. I can't give you much advice because I obviously failed. If you're from a surrounding state, or the South in general, play that up as much as you can. If you have a genuine interest in healthcare, especially on the transactional side, bring that up.

NY will absolutely dip lower than DC.

If I want a secondary market (think kc/indy/Louisville) should I bid those markets high since there aren't that many slots. Or lower to ensure I get some NYC / other large market screeners

Look through your recruitment handbook and see how many other people are originally from that market. If it isn't many, I wouldn't worry about bidding them high. If there's only 5 people with obvious ties to, e.g., Louisville, on their resume who bid Stites, that's probably who the preselects are going to. I doubt there are 19 people who even bid some of those firms.

But you should really already be mass mailing those firms before OCI starts. They may say just wait to bid them at OCI, but more likely they'll look at you anyway. If I were in your position I would bid all of the secondary markets in which you have obvious ties to after the major market firms you want. If you don't get them at OCI, send them and email and try to get an interview anyway.

But honestly if you were born/raised in Louisville, maybe went to UG there, and Stites doesn't preselect you, then you probably just didn't meet their grade cutoff.

depends on a grades, ties, etc. generally, I don't recall too many people looking for those markets so I might bid those lower becasue you'll probably get preselected if you have strong ties and decent or good grades.

I understand that Bradley does the 1L thing mostly now, but how can 4.0 LR not get any nashville firm, like 10+ come to OCI, that just doesn't make any sense. There aren't that many people from "the area", unless you start counting MS, AL, GA, KY etc. Maybe you only really wanted BBS, Baker, Waller, Bradley?

Other than BBS, Baker, Waller, and Bradley who is left? I guess Miller Martin and Sherrard Roe but they have really small class sizes. Nashville ties seem to be a requirement (or TN or KY generally) unless you are an URM or something. High grades are another requirement but it likely won't be enough.

Nashville market sux.

previous butthurt anon who missed nashville here

It's such a crapshoot with the smaller firms that it's very easy to miss them. When a firm only takes one person, like Neal/Sherrard, etc., you can't expect it to be you. I bid all the Nashville firms. I got one callback, and it didn't turn into an offer. I had no trouble getting callbacks/offers in other markets, but Nashville firms just wouldn't bite. Not working in Nashville for 1L summer probably didn't help. My guess is that it's really because I didn't really have a good reason for wanting Nashville other than I really liked it and wanted to stay. I tried to play up healthcare, which I genuinely was interested in, but I was litigation-focused, so that might have hurt me depending on how the market is.

But the main takeaway is that Nashville firms will take people with lower GPAs if they have strong Nashville ties over people with really high grades and little or no ties. But they don't generally have to dip very far grade-wise. Look at the c/o 2016 recruitment handbook for all the people who got Nashville. Almost all of them list their home towns as Nashville, or at least somewhere in TN, or went to Vandy UG. The others probably have some other tie that isn't apparent on their resume, like family or a fiancee.

Not saying you can't beat the odds and get Nashville with a 3.9/LR without ties, but don't expect it to be easy.

How many people actually end up with jobs out of OCI/job fairs, last year roughly half?

I figured it up that out of my class, about 58% are going to firms of 100+ (I included two people going to Lightfoot and one person going to Morris Nichols in that because they pay market; that also includes people who split and at least one firm was 100+). Really difficult to tell what % got their job from OCI/job fairs though. So definitely less than half the class ended up with a job from OCI/job fair, but of the people with jobs at firms, the majority came from OCI/job fair.

That's not bad. Would you still recommend mass mailing if in top third-ish maybe top 25%?

I would recommend mass mailing no matter what your grades are, tbh. No matter what market you're targeting, there have to be firms that aren't coming to our OCI/job fairs that you would work at. Once you get into it, mass mailing is almost zero effort. Start doing it now while you aren't bogged down with OCI/callbacks.

was in a similar ballpark gradewise and didn't get an offer from OCI. you're an idiot if you don't mass mail

Do we know what a normal amount of screeners is?

I hate that Vandy is so late with OCI, because firms are already on the move. I have 2 callbacks and 10 more interviews before OCI, but reading around other posts shows me that's not even "safe". I started mass mailing yesterday

Anyone have any info on Butler Snow? Im not actually a Vandy student but I lived in Nashville for a couple years (right before law school) and so I bid on some Nashville firms since I guess I have some small ties--Butler Snow is the only one that offered me a preselect.

Mods--if I'm not sure if I can post in here w/o being a vandy student, but i figured they'd have the best info.

I mean getting screeners and callbacks at this point from mass mailing is definitely great but I know of some people with v100 offers already. Keep mailing people !
