Apologies for the slow start of this thread.
_________________________________________________________________

Don't out yourself. Feel free to use anon (I'll be switching over to it soon as it is). If you want to keep track of your posts sign with a name but honestly, I've never understood why that was necessary, especially now since we can quote up to 8 times.

Don't out others. This includes saying where someone goes to school (especially if they've posted under their username) and their past alts.

Don't be an asshole.

Do remember to mass mail.

Step 1. Bid SullCrom, Skadden, Cravath, Weil, and all then all the other lesser-sweatshop firms.

Step 2. Kill self

ETA: this is for HYS kids. For everyone else, same but add a step in the middle: "hustle like a motherfucker"

I'm actually really loving my SA but A) I don't believe in free time and B) I know this is as good as it gets.

Happy to give advice but as anyone in the on-topics can tell you I did step for step everything you're not supposed to.

No stress - just remember: one day you will die and nothing you do until then will have a lasting impact on this Earth save in the minds of a select few who will themselves be dead in time. So, y'know, just have fun with it or something

How do you tell what satellite offices have what practice areas? I've tried searching in NALP and Chambers but it isn't matching up with what I'm finding on some firm websites.

For example (I'm not actually looking at wcc irl though):
Do a search in NALP/Chambers in Local Area for white collar crime. It comes up with nothing. Then look up Local Firm 1 on their website, they have WCC listed prominently. Cool, done, they just must not be big enough to come up or whatever. Then look up Big Firm 2 with a satellite office in that area. They also list WCC but don't list which offices do it. Is it safe to say that, if that satellite office didn't come up on the list when I searched in NALP or Chambers or whatever, it doesn't do that practice area?

Also (for these bigger firms) practice area > location or location > practice area?

there's going to be almost nothing that can be given and blanket advice to people from different schools

even at close schools (e.g., NYU and CLS) things vary greatly

find the partners who work in that office

like, if you're looking for white collar, find white collar partners in the firm and see where they're based out of

also, generally having that narrow of a focus is probably going to be a bad thing

yeah but megathreads are fun.

e: the actual topic isn't super narrow and I'm not set on it. But I am worried about saying that I want to work in a practice area that doesn't exist in a specific office.

Saying instead that you're keeping an open mind works well for fnon satellite offices at big firms. Otherwise, what Smaug said - find the partners and you find the practice. Also some industries are more centered in certain regions - NY has most of the transactional (esp lender-side borrowing), DC has a lot of regulatory, etc.

I recommend trying to find the partners in that area, then. It's a bit of a pain, but it works. National firms generally don't like saying things like "our white color work is only in DC" or "our arbitration work is only in NY" but you can get an idea of which practice groups are centered where by looking at bios

a good question to ask if you're unsure about that stuff might be about whether work generally stays in one office or if it's spread across multiple—some firms seem to operate like little fiefdoms where maters are tightly controlled in one office, and other firms seem to throw bodies at matters from many offices/don't seem to care much about where the partner on the matter is located

(but, if you want to work on matters that are almost always under DC partners, you'd be better off being closer to those partners, I'd think)

I should also never post in this thread or give advice, because like Zacharus, I did many things wrong. (I did some things right, though!)

this is going to depend on the school, your grades, where you have ties, and the markets in question

in short: how hard do you ball?

Depends on your school. If you are like east coast with no ties, then you have to subtly convince them that you know that you'd like it there and would stay. Firms want ballers not bailers.
