NYU EIW Madness 2015

Post by Anonymous User » Tue Jun 09, 2015 9:30 am

Surprised we don’t have this up yet, but alas, it’s time to start thinking about the madness that is soon to come.
Keeping with tradition, this thread will be discussion about bidlists, screener results, and callbacks. Bidlists are due on to OCS by June 10th (noon) if you want them to review and comment on your preliminary list.

Let’s get it done!

We all want to maintain some privacy during this process. That said, it is also nice to keep track of who is saying what. I’m going to recommend that everyone pick a handle to sign their anonymous posts with (you obviously don’t have to) so that we can keep track of one another.

Bidding

The basics of bidlist stuff should be straightforward even if you’re not Socrates: if you think other people are more likely to bid on a firm, you should bid it high. Firms that are less grade-selective or that have fewer interview spots are more competitive, so you should probably rank them higher. Don’t rank a firm high just because you want it, but if you really want a particular firm it might be good to rank it high for your peace of mind. Finally, you should probably avoid spreading your bids out between multiple markets unless you have strong ties to all of those markets. We’ve all seen the data: there are just more jobs in New York, so NY is a solid backup for folks who are trying to head to California, Chicago or DC.

Callbacks

Once we’re at least part way through the first rings of interviewing hell, people will get callbacks. In past years, people would post the firm name and the initials of the person who interviewed them when they received a callback so that people would know that callbacks had gone out.

Good luck.

Do NYU kids just not gaf? columbia has like 4 pages of discussion and hard cutoffs for what slot you need to place a certain firm to avoid missing it in the lotto. We have nothing?

Also for any NYU students relying on data from the Columbia thread, I caution you -- the numbers are not the same. I.e. you need to bid Proskaur #1 to get it at Columbia, but I doubt that's equally true at NYU.

Might as well throw this out there. Any feedback would be appreciated. GPA is 3.21, interested in Corp. and have some good but tangential WE that I think I can spin.

To the person who posted his or her bid list above:

You will definitely not get Proskauer, Linklaters, and Kirkland where you have them now. Proskauer and Linklaters have to be at least among your top 5 bids. People missed Linklaters at 5 and Proskauer at 3 last year. Also, I'm pretty sure you won't get White & Case where you have it now.

I heard mixed things about Skadden. Some say it has to be top 10, but others say you could put it at the end and still get it like Cravath.

Take my comment with a grain of salt, as I am not an expert. More experienced people can correct me.

To the 3.89 person:

I don't think any bid list that has more than a dozen NYC firms is too aggressive for you at this point. Besides, you have Freshfields and Willkie high enough to have them as "safety" firms, if you ever need one. All the top NYC firms have large classes, and if you are such a bad interviewer that none of them wants you, chances are none of the supposedly "lower" firms will want you either. You should practice your interview skills as much as possible this summer, and I'm sure you'll get many offers.

To the 3.1 person:

I assume you mean New York, so in that case Baker & McKenzie might be too small to waste the number 1 bid on. Also, you have 3 firms in the top 10 (Sidley, Weil, White & Case) that do dip well below median but still tend to take people more from above 3.4. I think the rational choice is to cut at least Sidley, which is the smallest.

I would call the OCS, aggressively ask (with the tuition you are burdened with, you are entitled in every way to demand some useful information at least) for the firms that tend to be generous to the below-median people and give those firms priority in your bid list.

Also, I think you need to bid other cities as well if you want to bid on 50 firms; otherwise you are limited to only 40 firms.

That actually changed this year. New policy because supposedly people would bid cities they really weren't that interested in just to have the option to bid 50.

I've heard Skadden needs to be pretty high. Probably not top 5 but I think top 15 is safe.

Also I don't think it's possible for you to be 'too aggressive' with a 3.89. You're clearly above every firm's hiring average so you can put literally whatever you want. Unless I'm missing something...

To the 3.61 person:

I'm positive you will not get Paul Hastings, Dechert, Ropes & Gray, Shearman, and Sidley where you have them now. Also, you might be taking an excessive risk with respect to Jones Day and Paul Weiss in the 30's (my impression from studying past threads on the topic is that they are relatively more popular than peer firms).

To Starbucks Lover:

Because the OCS reveals so little about exactly where the firms clear, I don't think anyone can really tell you which of those firms will clear below, say, top 20. In fact, because people are only vaguely informed about how high to bid the firms (hence their choices being more unpredictable), I bet even the OCS can't tell for sure. I don't want to give any misleading advice. I think a lot will depend on which firms the OCS is recommending to the below-median people (who make up about 200 of the class) to bid for target or reach.

On another note, I saw in the CLS thread that you might get an interview or CB with Boies Schiller by mailing them or something, so that you don't have to use your EIW bid on them in that case. You might want to PM the CLS 2L's and 3L's in that thread to ask for further information. The credentials required for that might be really high, though.

I'd love some feedback on my list. 3.3, hoping to work in DC but targeting NY/DC equally just to be safe. I want to do international arbitration but I'm also looking at some firms/offices that are great for FCPA or international trade. I networked like crazy in spring so I don't think arbitration will be impossible for me to break into (although most of my contacts are in NY, unfortunately).

* = firms I really want an interview at; I'm especially interested in feedback on whether I'm definitely going to miss out on one of them based on not ranking it highly enough.

1. Freshfields - DC (16)*
2. Simpson Thacher - DC (21, split w/ LA)*
3. Linklaters - NY (39)*
4. Arnold & Porter - DC (42)*

11. King & Spalding - DC (21)*
12. Hogan Lovells - NY (77)*
13. Ropes & Gray - DC (116, split w/ all offices)
14. Sidley Austin - DC (21)
15. foley hoag - DC, International Litigation and Arbitration Practice Only (21)*
16. DLA Piper - SF (12, split w/ other CA offices)

30. Debevoise & Plimpton - NY (154)*
31. Sidley Austin - NY (77)
32. Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe - SF (21)

49. Kirkland & Ellis - London, Capital Markets Only (15)
[50 is gov't]

I'm also planning to contact the DC offices of some of the NY firms on my list (ones that won't be at EIW) - White & Case, Skadden, Clifford Chance, Kirkland, Weil, and Quinn Emanuel.

I'm the 3.1 who posted above. Thanks for the response. I've updated my list based on advice I've gotten.

Got rid of several reaches and moved up some of the more popular firms. Having a 3.1,it’s hard balancing the firms that are LEAST grade conscientious (which have small summer classes) with firms that are still not that selective, but have larger summer classes and are better firms and therefore, more popular and likely to clear. I'm especially not sure how to order the ones between 13 and 23 which seem very similar.

What I would love to know is if there are any in my top 25 that I am unlikely to score a screener with? Any advice for moving any stuff around? Also, I have no idea what to put at the bottom of my list, that I can actually still get that low. Firms I’m thinking about include Duane Morris, Briar Cashman, Arent Fox, V&E, Bracewell.

People who have been through EIW before, what's the best strategy for bidding a small secondary market? I really want to work in a specific location that has only a few firms coming (fewer than 10) for EIW. Do I have to bid them all very high on my list to get an interview, or should I be putting desirable NYC alternatives 1-10 on my list with my target secondary market firms at 10-20? The thinking is that there will be less competition for the secondary market firm interviews. Also, I'm sub-median, so I need to bid strategically.

Let me know what you guys think of this list. It's a little schizophrenic, with the weird split with DC. I'm honestly not sure how high/low to rank some of the DC firms. Kind of threw some in there and hoping a few will stick, since I'm not really sure what to do with bids 20-30 anyway. I also really have no idea what to do with those last like 10 spots at all.

3.4x cumulative, but dramatic grade increase from first semester to 2nd (3.2 to 3.65ish), so hoping that will work in my favor with some of my reaches. Great work experience pre-law school, science undergrad major, 1L summer job that seems to resonate with a lot of firms. Interested in transactional but want to get a taste of lit as well. Very solid interviewer - I hesitate to say great because that makes me sound like a tool, but definitely objectively quite good. Bolded are the firms I absolutely don't want to miss.
