Hello! I'm 3.79 strongly interested in going back to Bay Area (but will take NYC if necessary), interested in VC/PE/emerging companies, but general transaction is just fine.

Frankly I'm at lost as to what to do with the NYC firms. On one hand I want to rank the CA firms high on top, but does that mean I will lose out on the popular NYC firms (assuming no luck in CA)?

I got some preselect interviews at the Bay Area Diverisyt Career Fair, but does anyone have information on what the CB chances are for BADCF (trying to decide if I should bid on the same firms in AJF).

Any feedback is much apprecited!

Hey everyone. I know that there are many non-TLS posting 1L lurkers out there monitoring this thread, so I'd just like to take a minute and talk about mass-mailing.

We've been killing it the last few years and really punching above our weight in terms of great employment outcomes. That being said, if you are not from New York City and would prefer a job in your home market to no job at all, I encourage you to shoot out cover letters and resumes to, at the very least, a few firms in your home market that aren't coming to AJF. A few hours of your time can end up with you receiving an offer in your back pocket and walking into AJF worry-free. This can only better your interview performance.

This isn't meant to be a gloomy post; I just wanted to remind you to send out some emails while preparing for AJF!

Good luck everyone

I have no idea what to do with CA firms, but the way you have it set up looks pretty good. You should ask someone who did the BADCF if you should bother even bidding the same firms if you're going to interview with them there anyway.

I'd probably flip DPW and Wilmer, because I know I got Wilmer at 5 and DPW at 6. You won't get MoFo at 7, so you might as well put S&C and Cravath at 7 and 8 and hope you get them because of how competitive they are. Or maybe you can get Winston at 7, but I'm not sure.

Simpson and PH can both go lower. Skadden and Weil need to be higher. Even Debevoise should be 1 or two higher to be safe. I'd put Skadden at 2 or 3. Maybe Weil at 3 and Wilson at 4, especially since you already have an interview with Wilson.

Anon, when would you recommend starting mass mailing if you want to position yourself like you described. I have a pretty good idea of where I'm going to target outside of NYC but I'm not sure if i should wait until journal results come out or start pulling the trigger now.

On Monday, I don't think you're getting anything from Shearman on down. I don't think you get Proskauer at 5, so I think I would put Fried Frank at 3, Jones Day at 4, WilmerHale at 5, Davis Polk at 6, and Schulte at 7. Not even sure if you get Schulte at 7, but I don't see any other good firms here to put at 7.

Willkie should be in top 3, and should probably be at #2 with Weil at #3. Not sure if you could get Kirkland at 4, so you may want to consider dropping it to increase your chances of getting other firms. Debevoise should probably be above Simpson, Skadden is probably too low, White and Case is definitely too low. You have good chance of getting Cadwalader and Dechert if you just bump them up slightly, so again, you may want to consider dropping something you'd be unlikely to get, especially since most of these firms are above your GPA.

I'm assuming there's a day 3 but you're just not bothering to post it.

You can start mass mailing any time around now. I do not think that you have to wait for journal results, and in fact getting them later is a good excuse to followup with firms that do not reply in a few weeks. For example, if you mail a bunch of firms and just have radio silence in around 3 weeks, you would then be able to send a followup not just affirming your interest but also building your candidacy by saying you made LR or ILJ or JLPP.

Also, as far as mass mailing goes, I have said this in quite a few PMs but be broad in your application. You can be as aggressive as you want to in mass mailing since you have nothing to lose by trying, including mailing markets that you do not have ties to or that you only have weak ties to. I know at least one person that ended up with their only offer being from a firm in a tertiary market they had only very weak ties to. The general rule with mass mailing is to let firms reject you, not the other way around. This is not mandatory, but just know that you can. I agree with anon that at the very least almost everyone should mail to firms in your home market. If you are from the NYC area this is a bit different; in that case I would mail firms in your next strongest tie area, like NJ.

Hey guys, I'd love some advice. I'm at a 3.59, wouldn't say I have a strong preference for transaction vs. litigation. Though I'm probably leaning slightly towards litigation. Here's what I have so far. It's very tentative tbh lol I'm just trying to get something on paper atm.

Monday
1. Latham
2. Milbank
3. Fried Frank
4. Jones Day
5. Proskauer
6. WilmerHale
7. Shearman
8. Schulte Roth
9. Cahill
10. Morrison & Foerster
11. Akin Gump
12. Greenberg
13. Sullivan & Cromwell
14. Freshfields
15. Davis Polk

Tuesday
1. Paul Weiss
2. Weil
3. Willkie
4. Paul Hastings
5. White & Case
6. Debevoise
7. Simpson Thatcher
8. Dechert
9. Cadwalader
10.Kirkland & Ellis
11. Hogan Lovells
12. Linklaters
13. Goodwin Procter
14. Kaye Scholer

Wednesday
1. Clifford Chance
2. Ropes & Gray
3. Cooley
4. Cromwell & Moring

Minor question, but how frowned upon is it to use Lawyering memos. The nature of my job is such that I may not be able to get a writing sample out of it due to confidentiality issues.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it's perfectly fine to use a Lawyering memo. That's what I'll probably have to do since I am working for a judge and am not expecting to be able to use my writing because it's for a pending case.

Piggybacking off of this, do firms expect us to bring a writing sample? I know White & Case wants us to have one for AJF, but I assumed they were an outlier.

I'd ask one of the law clerks about it, or see if your chambers has a handbook that addresses writing samples. Might be able to use a sample from a judicial internship if you redact the identifying info first.

3.8131 (10%), did writing comp but don't believe I did stellar. I prefer transactional to litigation, but want a firm that does both. I am supposedly a good interviewee, I am somewhat risk averse, and I want NYC.

All NYC unless stated otherwise.

Day 1.
1. Latham 3.63 (3.45/3.88) 18
2. Gibson Dunn 3.80 (3.65/4.01) 20
3. Cravath 3.78 (3.62/4.01) 36
4. Cleary 3.87 (3.92/3.77) 40
5. Davis Polk 3.73 (3.24/4.01) 60
6. WilmerHale 3.62 (3.24/3.92) 40
7. Shearman 3.48 (3.02/3.77) 60
8. Cahill Gordon 3.44 (3.19/3.65) 60
9. Jones Day 3.55 (3.24/3.88) 40
10. Akin 3.64 (3.57/3.73) 40

14. Proskauer Rose 3.55 (3.38/3.67) 20
15. Morrison & Foerster 3.58 (3.28/3.71) 20

Day 2. (not sure who to add)
1. Skadden 3.74 (3.43/4.01) 20
2. Paul Weiss 3.68 (3.24/4.01) 40
3. Kirkland Ellis 3.67 (3.42/3.91) 20

Not sure who to add for day 2 and 3.

Any suggestions would be thoroughly appreciated.

Piggybacking off of this, do firms expect us to bring a writing sample? I know White & Case wants us to have one for AJF, but I assumed they were an outlier.
First, it's really common to use a lawyering memo and a lot of people do it.

Second, yes have copies available. Most firms won't ask but a couple will. You don't need to bring one for every firm, carry like 3 a day in your folio.

All NYC unless stated otherwise.

Day 1.
1. Latham 3.63 (3.45/3.88) 18
2. Gibson Dunn 3.80 (3.65/4.01) 20
3. Cravath 3.78 (3.62/4.01) 36
4. Cleary 3.87 (3.92/3.77) 40
5. Davis Polk 3.73 (3.24/4.01) 60
6. WilmerHale 3.62 (3.24/3.92) 40
7. Shearman 3.48 (3.02/3.77) 60
8. Cahill Gordon 3.44 (3.19/3.65) 60
9. Jones Day 3.55 (3.24/3.88) 40
10. Akin 3.64 (3.57/3.73) 40
11. Fried Frank 3.58 (3.35/3.78) 40
12. Milbank Tweed 3.60 (3.43/3.88) 20
13. Freshfields Bruckhaus 3.64 (3.43/3.92) 20
14. Proskauer Rose 3.55 (3.38/3.67) 20
15. Morrison & Foerster 3.58 (3.28/3.71) 20
You can swap Cravath and Wilmer. Or at least put Wilmer 3, Cravath 5, and DPW 6. In fact, I've heard you can get Cravath at 7, so if you wanted to risk it, I'd say put your choice of Jones Day/Cahill/Shearman 3, Wilmer 4, Cleary 5, DPW 6 and Cravath 7. Currently I don't think you're getting anything outside your top 6. Actually, Sullivan and Cromwell would be a good pick for 7 or 8. Not sure why it's not here.

1. Skadden 3.74 (3.43/4.01) 20
2. Paul Weiss 3.68 (3.24/4.01) 40
3. Kirkland Ellis 3.67 (3.42/3.91) 20
4. Simpson Thacher 3.73 (3.05/4.01) 60
5. Debevoise 3.69 (3.24/3.92) 40
6. Paul Hastings 3.61 (3.29/4.01) 80
7. Weil Gotshal 3.57 (3.24/3.91) 40
8. Dechert 3.54 (3.16/3.90) 60
9. White & Case 3.57 (3.3.5/3.81) 40
10. Willkie Farr 3.56 (3.37/3.91) 40
11. Linklaters 3.49 (3.24/3.88) 40
I've heard rumblings that PW should be #1, but #2 should be sufficient. Simpson and Debevoise can go lower, but I don't know what a good #4 firm would be. Maybe Dechert or White and Case, or Paul Hastings if you're worried about not getting it at 7 when you move everything down. You won't get Weil at 7. And at least flip Simpson and Debevoise if Debevoise has 60 screeners instead of 40. I keep seeing conflicting numbers.

4. Bryan Cave 3.25 (3.06/3.43) 20

Not sure who to add for day 2 and 3.

Any suggestions would be thoroughly appreciated.
Add whoever you want, but you probably won't get them unless you change the top 8. Maybe on Day 2 you could put Cadwalader at 8 and get it. If you're just asking for firms you can throw on the bottom and mail, add whoever you might want to work for. Maybe Sidley?

Interested in both lit and corporate, although at this point I can probably make a better argument for why I'd be good for lit than corporate.

Sitting on a 3.62 and only looking at NYC.

I'll take any and all feedback. Anyone think I'm aiming too high? Assume no LR.

Thanks in advance.

What else are you bidding? Where's Fried Frank, Jones Day, Akin Gump, Cahill, etc.?

I think Shearman and Wilmer should be flipped.

Willkie seems popular this year. I'd flip them with Linklaters. Cadwalader can go down further to 7 and you can bump up PH and Dechert.
