3.29 trying this again. Which is the easier hurdle: class size, or GPA?

I stripped my top 20 of most Chicago firms to include more NYC. I've gained more in class size, but this brought the average GPA up. I'm afraid that I may be playing an even riskier game by essentially skipping most of the less-selective Chicago firms. Many of these offices have medians at our top 30%. Am I shooting myself in the foot?

Firms 6-14 are priority.

1 Dechert LLP New York 20*
2 Kaye Scholer LLP New York 20
3 Vedder Price Kaufman & Kammholz PC Chicago 20
4 Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP Chicago 31*
5 Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP Chicago 40
6 Reed Smith LLP New York 20*
7 Alston & Bird LLP New York 20
8 O'Melveny & [deleted] LLP New York 20
9 Proskauer New York 20
10 Fried Frank Harris Shriver & Jacobson LLP New York 40
11 Cahill Gordon & Reindel New York 20
12 Weil Gotshal & Manges LLP New York 60
13 Milbank Tweed Hadley & McCloy LLP New York 40
14 Shearman & Sterling LLP New York 40

17 Clifford Chance US LLP New York 20
18 Sidley Austin LLP New York 20
19 Seward & Kissel LLP New York 20

Is Seyfarth Shaw (Chi) coming? I see a lot of people have them in their bidlist but I don't see them on the OCI page on Symplicity. Maybe I'm missing something.

What do you want to do? Some of those firms are only hiring for transactional (Paul Hastings) and others only do lit (Miller Shakman). No way you get Kirkland or Sidley that far down. Did you look at the callbacks by gpa document? You are pretty far under the minimums for Miller Shakman and Barack Ferranzano.

same anon from above.. i'm wondering if it is a bad idea to bid these chicago firms ahead of the new york ones? obviously the new york ones have a bigger class size but the chicago ones seem to have less interview spots in general... any advice is appreciated!

You should do a little more thinking about your bidlist here. You put Barrack at #2!?! seriously? It's a small, boutique firm that generally has extremely high standards for grades (lots of associate graduates from NU there are magna). I would be surprised if it ever fills in the top 10, 15, or maybe even 20 spots.

Firms like Kirkland and Sidley in the 30s is just a joke. Those absolutely need to be bid in the top 10 to be worth having a shot.

Chicago is hard to bid because it's popular, there are few firms that are forgiving in terms of GPA (3.4 is a tough sell for Chicago), and there are not a ton of interview or SA slots per firm. But, please have a strategy when you select the order that you put firms in.

Other than Barrack, your list looks OK as far as the firms you selected. Just rearrange according to some mix of # of slots, GPA selectivity, and popularity.

I gues with 3.8 GPA, you’re in striking distance of all V10.

I have no idea why someone with you GPA would bother with Freshfields or Fried Frank.
But to tweak it a little:
Fresh down 8
FF down 5
Ropes Up 7
Sidley up 10
Gibson up 10-11
JD up 11-13
MoFo up 10-13
PH up 12-18
Wilmer up 20-22

This is far from perfect, but a start.

Agree with the above advice about 3.7+ not needing to be super conservative if looking in NY. Worth getting aggressive with one of FF or fresh and replacing with another firm with higher medians

18 Sidley Austin LLP New York 20
19 Seward & Kissel LLP New York 20
20 Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP New York 20

*Multi-office slots.

I don't think you'll get Cahill that low.

But also I would recommend still bidding on the chicago firms you previously cut at the very bottom, just because they still apparently get a list of everyone that bid them (without what position you ranked them) and you can try to reach out to them after results come out, saying you missed them with your bid but were still interested if they had any extra time for another screener.

And another general point to understand, which has been brought up earlier in the thread but its worth repeating, is that average callback gpa is not indicative of what their true target GPA is, and definitely not indicative of what their cutoffs are. Firms approach OCI exactly how 2Ls do, you have your reaches and you have your safeties. They will callback people that they know are reaches and are very unlikely to actually wind up working there, much less even accepting their callbacks, just because why wouldn't they? So even if you see an average callback at our 30%, their cutoff could still be at (or below) median. With this being said, its much better to bid firms with larger class sizes where you are below their average but above their cutoff, than to bid firms with much smaller class sizes and you are above their average.

So back to OP's position just below median... I think generally you should feel comfortable targeting firms with average callbacks of 3.5, but if they are much higher than that then it might not be worth making them a high priority.

Any reason you have dentons so high? The past few years they've had 2-3 summers. Maybe that's changed, but it seems like a waste of a spot that you could put another firm in for your top 10.

Let's get rid of cravath, Davis Polk, and Simpson entirely. Move up fried frank to 8-10. Move up jones day to 15-20. Move up Allen and overy to top 20. Vinson to top 30. Omelv to top 30. Clifford chance to top 18 (give yourself a real Clifford chance to get an interview there. Get it?). Dechert to top 5 (you can even say there that you want a Cali office because a lot of people bidding them would want NY and you could stand out, but also say you are open to New York with them for sure).

Firms to move up: fried frank, Cahill, white and case, paul Weiss. Firms to move down: Wilmer

You said you will tell people transactional but for your #1 bid dechert Chicago, tell them you want lit - that's all hey have at that office.

I know NY and not Chicago but that's all I got. Pro tip: the key to bidding in the top 30 is picking up interviews where a job is attainable. The key to bidding 30-40 is picking up interview. Getting 1 interview after spot 32 or so is a huge win. Think strategically about how to accomplish that if you are worried about striking out. Look at other firms in random markets just recruiting for said market and bid it 35-40.
