Southeastern Minority Job Fair 2015

Post by LSATobsessed » Thu May 21, 2015 6:56 pm

So bidding has been open for almost a week and I thought it would be cool to make a thread for the SEMJF.
So who did y'all bid for? Target market? Did you drop a bid for some firms who don't require cover letters?

Is tbis fair based on the firms picking who they want to interview by reviewing the submitted material first, or is it based on some type of lottery?

I just ask because I wasn't sure why we had to rank our bids if it was a preselect basis.

I made 13 bids.

I submitted 10 bids, all for Florida. All of the firms I applied for required a cover letter except one. I wish I realized that before I wrote it. Oh well.

How does everyone feel about SEMJF? Some of the firms I applied to will also be on campus for OCIs. I wonder if they will decline to interview me at SEMJF because they know that.

I'm also curious if the firms can see where we ranked them. I hope not.

^ I submitted 20. I got out to all the South Florida firms and then random firms who did'nt require cover letters. Since we don't know our Spring 2015 grades yet, I was happy to put the only grade that I got back, which was an A in legal writing.

I thought about applying to more, but I only applied to firms where I would accept an offer, except maybe my last bid. I hope I don't regret that.

Used all 20 bids, generally to the Atlanta market but a few to DC and NY as well.

Interesting question about if firms that are coming to our OCI were a good idea to bid on?

I applied to the firms coming to my OCI. There were only 10 firms I wanted to apply to at SEMJF and worst case, my targeted firms will get another look at my resume. If I am selected to interview, then I probably won't apply for the same firms at OCI, but if not, I will definitely apply again.

Okay, so when I was bidding for firms for the SEMJF, I only had one grade available from the Spring 2015 semester, which was an A in legal writing, I reported this on the unofficial transcript that this was the only grade available so far. The rest of my grades are to be released after the bidding deadline occurred. Technically, these firms wont see the rest of my second semester grades, correct?

They will only see what you tell them but I'm sure the firms will expect the full list during the interview.

Bid on the 5 firms in the ATL area not coming to our OCI. I didn't want to bid on the firms that are coming, because I'm not exactly the diversity they are looking for at this fair and I wanted a more appropriate setting, even if that means prolonging an interview. Credited?

That's an interesting perspective. I asked my career counselor the same thing and she insisted that all people regardless of race are welcome and I should attend. I've attended diversity events (not job fairs, just networking) before and I've never encountered any resistance.

Has anyone received a request for more information directly from a firm's recruiter?

What was the Resume Review thing? I was able to upload an updated resume but obviously none of the firms would get that this late.

I'm not sure. It doesn't make sense. The application deadline is long past and by looking through the SEMJF Employers instructions I know that the employers had to make their selections by the 21st (approximately). I didn't change a thing.

Results are up! I got some preselects for reaches and was not pre-selected (or even given alternate status) for a couple safeties. A great surprise (though confusing about the safeties)!!!

I'm grateful to at least have a chance.

2 preselects out of 5 bids. Above median at T-14 and not diverse.

6 preselects out of 13 bids, 2 alternates, and still waiting on 2 employers. Our OCI applications open up soon and I'm a little confused about whether to apply to the same firms where I already have an interview. I figure it can't hurt.

I'm curious whether it says something along the lines of still waiting next to the firms that haven't posted yet or if it says "not invited." I'm technically waiting on one firm, but it says "not invited"....

5 preselects and 1 alternate out of 15 bids. Having only Fall grades really sucked considering Spring brought me from way below median to slightly above.

I got 7 preselects out of 10 bids; no alternates. Top 25% at a T1.

3 preselects and 1 alternate and I am around median at a Top 20. I applied to 20 firms. Target market was SoFL, but received interviews from Orlando, DC, and Miami.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
