Surprised that the vast majority went to law school in the same city, or at least state, as the team. I wonder if they all started working for the team straight out and worked their way up or something.

It looks like wildly different stories...anything from a sheer nepotism hire (Cavs - guy went to undergrad and law school with the owner Dan Gilbert and practiced in Real Estate before coming over...they must be homies) to WTF (Grizzlies - guy is currently an analyst on ESPN...but was a criminal defense attorney before joining Memphis).Yukos wrote:Surprised that the vast majority went to law school in the same city, or at least state, as the team. As was alluded above, nepotism is probably your best bet.bballbrett5 wrote:so how do i get one of these jobs?

There's some guy on that Stealth Lawyer program on Bloomberg's Youtube that became a coach for the Browns. Not exactly GC, but yeah.bballbrett5 wrote:so how do i get one of these jobs?
The downside is, he went to Harvard, slaved through mass mailing and random connections to get an opportunity, only by offering to work for free, which he did for like 2-3 years, before getting a position... and he's still a coach for the Browns.... in Cleveland... Ohio.
Moral of the story, go to Harvard.

Caren Cook is not the GC of the Hawks. It is Scott Wilkinson http://www.nba.com/hawks/news/Scott_Wilkinson_Bio.html

Surprised that you're surprised by this. Sports is 99% who you know, 1% prestige.Yukos wrote:Surprised that the vast majority went to law school in the same city, or at least state, as the team. I wonder if they all started working for the team straight out and worked their way up or something.

All the people I know who work in sports law (not that many, but a few) went to T14 and made connections through internships/work. I don't think prestige itself is that important, but if it opens up jobs at agencies and firms which give you connections at teams, it can help.TheUnicornHunter wrote:Surprised that you're surprised by this. Yeah but I was talking about boomers. I wasn't talking about classmates, obviously my sample would be a little skewed.TheUnicornHunter wrote:Any chance you go to a T14?Yukos wrote:All the people I know who work in sports law (not that many, but a few) went to T14 and made connections through internships/work. For those that had firm experience, I'd be curious to see that appended to the list.

Becoming GC anywhere is a long shot based on various factors with law school credential having minimal impact.
Proskauer does a lot of work with the NBA - they could be a good starting place if your goal is to work at a sports team. People I know who made the jump had an inside connection who passed along their resume.
