Is that what you're hearing in NYC?

Only one? Or one that you know of?

We're not really privy to firm-wide information or anything relating to finances outside of what can be gleaned by anyone. I know that a number of people left the firm this summer, two gave pretty bleak reasons, and there are certain departments with a dearth of junior associates. I don't think that that is an indication of anything "wrong" in any great sense and I never felt like anything was wrong. I just felt like some people were unhappy. I don't think that that is particularly unusual.

I obviously think that they made multiple errors this summer, though. Additionally, I can only speak for myself but I know that the end of summer was incredibly stressful and that I more often than not did not enjoy my time.

At least with 3 people of 10, plus maybe the 1 in Chicago, the problem looks a lot more like a firm problem than a problem with any of the people not offered.

Hey guys -- kind of a weird question but do billable hours matter for the summer? If so how many hours did you guys generally bill?

Not at my firm, At least. I aimed for 7 total (4 real hours )

Wait so you worked 7 and billed four?

Edit: Just wanted to clarify...this waiting for offer business is making me all sorts of anxious. Thanks :)

No,you bill 7or however many, but Sublime is saying that only 4 were actual work. I had many days where I billed 5+ to the summer program because I went to a long lunch and an event, or it was slow and I spent all day on deadspin.

That answer will depend completely on whatever firm you were at. You could, and people have, gotten offers at my firm doing MAYBE 2 hours of real work a week. Your time is almost guaranteed to be a write-off anyway, so there's probably not much harm you could do.

Ok cool thanks guys. And I suppose it's one of those things I would've gotten a nudge on ahead of time if it was bad. Haven't heard anything but I suppose you never know :(

Only one. I know that we don't get any actual info, was wondering if you had heard anything through the grapevine. Some people left in Chi. too, but those were personal decisions, so I never got the sense that it might be a firm thing. Something to keep an eye on.

For those of us who did get no offered, what is the best way to go about explaining that to future employers? Is it worth explaining that it was out of the blue, a space thing or that X% of the class got no offered? Do you do it in cover letters or only when asked about getting an offer?

I'd probably treat it like grades and don't bring it up unless asked. Definitely not in a cover letter.

I'm not as helpful regarding how to explain it if/when it is brought up, but I'd assume those reasons might not be the best to bring up because "out of the blue" implies you're oblivious to perception and maybe weren't adapting to criticism, and a "space thing" or "XX% of the class was no-offered" implies you weren't as good the ones who did get offered.

I'd say maybe go for the bad fit angle if asked, but I'll defer to more experienced minds on that point.

Hours seemed to matter at my firm -- or at least the quantity of useful work you turned around mattered, which is the same thing. But I was at a boutique where the firm wanted you to get a sense for what associate life would be like. From my conversations with friends, true biglaw SA's seem to be something else entirely.
