yeah, totally depends on the firm. I'd imagine if they were big NY firms, you're probably in a good position. I had several attorney recruiters tell me, "if you end up not liking your summer, reach out and come here," though I have no real idea how open that door would have been had I gone that route. Def not something to really bank on either way for sure.2014 wrote:It's certainly a positive that you had an offer and they might care about your grades going up but it's by no means a guarantee. if you don't mind, could you send me a pm saying which firm. i'm considering trying to go to chicago instead of the market i'm currently in, and i would be looking for corp.Anonymous User wrote:My situation:
SA at a well-respected Chicago biglaw firm. 100% want to do corporate. Over my summer, I've realized the corporate group is very slow and seems like a lot of tension among the associates in terms of who gets what little work is available. The firm is a traditionally 100% offer firm. I'd like to try to use my offer and jump ship to a higher ranked Chicago firm.
Me: t-14 median, very strong Chicago ties, decent WE. My concerns are: (a) word gets around to the firm I received my offer from that I am looking at other firms (Chicago is small legal community); (b) I already missed out on "3L OCI" so I would be stuck with mass-mailing; (c) I have no idea how to phrase a cover letter to mention that I received an offer and am interested in seeking other opportunities.
Any advice or can someone point me to another thread that answers these questions? Should I start my own thread?

1 week left and just found out that I missed a case on a memo. Could this have been the worst possible timing?

Two weeks to go and I'm already wigging out re: offers. The actual offer wait is going to be just excruciating.

Have heard multiple no offer stories about people speaking up and asking questions or generally being idiots in depositions

One related to a very high profile case and the kid at the end made some weird accusation about evidence not being sufficient and what else could the witness provide
The other was some kid jumping in to ask random shit

To the person who asked about switching offices, it's probably prudent to wait until after you get an offer. I know many people who did this, and it worked out for them. There's nothing to be gained by doing it before, and the firm won't be hurt if you ask a few weeks later when that office still has ample time and opp to replace you.

Re: Summer Associate Class of 2015
Why would they do that? I once stayed till 2, but that was because I realized I made a big mistake that affected the whole product, and wanted to correct it before the deadline. There is no way summers are getting work that requires all nighters. It's human nature to want to feel what you're doing is important, but the all nighter would reflect such a delusional perspective I'd think people would have concerns. Of course, it's possible that Wachtell's business plan is to start a big prestigious firm, get clients, get summers and have summers do all the work while they are in the Caribbean.

Re: Summer Associate Class of 2015
I once stayed til 7:30 but got jokingly "chastised' and forced to leave. They also limited our workload significantly so there wouldn't be a need to stay late ever. 2 in my class pretty much always did anyway.
I like my firm - it seems like they're going to give us all offers but the waiting will still be a pain because you never know.

Not all summer programs are the same though. I've gotten a few assignments that required late nights, including one past midnight for a partner who wanted it that night and gave it to me at 545. And most of the other summers stay late more frequently than I do.
