What are the keyphrases/signs indicating "offer" and "no offer" at mid summer review at your firm?

Do attorneys email/talk each other and discuss whether a summer will be offered or not before the executive committee meets?

I just heard a good key phrase from someone telling me about his days as an SA.

They told him, "You know, we think you'd be much happier doing something in the public sector."

Soooo I get the sense that my partner wouldn't actually know if I was getting no-offered or cold-offered. I had a fantastic mid-summer review, but it seemed like she was mostly just reading off a sheet that recruiting gave her, and while we were talking it didn't really seem like she had any part in the actual process whatsoever (besides reading me my reviews and generally mentoring me). Is it just perhaps that no one takes it too seriously since it's a 100% offer firm?

Partner at my firm like to go up to summers and say, "you're fine, but just in case, what's your back-up plan?" My hero.

I'm not sure if it's more funny if he was serious or if he was just messing with them.

Do/can summers hook up with associates? Or is that maybe a problem?

It's certainly not a problem for the summer associate.

At some point in time it was acceptable. Not sure if it still is. See http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/co ... 02144.html

Just over 3 weeks left. How's everyone else doing/feeling? I'm in a bit of a pickle since I've decided I want to rotate through one of the firm's other offices once I start full time to get exposure to another practice group. Not sure how that conversation is going to go down if/when I get the full-time offer.

Probably highly firm dependent. My firm is very open to those types of request, but whether or not it's feasible is highly dependent upon the hiring needs of the particular practice group.

Halp TLS: I'm only summer in satellite, and today is basically the big recruiting event cocktail hour. Managing partner + recruiting staff are in town, partially for this.

How do I not aspie? I'm so bad at cocktail events.

Apparently this happened at my firm. The summer was fine, but the associate got canned.

My "V25" firm has made it clear that they care way more about AmLaw than Vault

For real? Well if that's not a deterrent...
Still, that is surprising.

Why? A SA is nothing but a ~10 week interview, and I'd guess labor laws/courts would frown at hooking up with interviewees.

No way is this illegal unless there is quid pro quo.

Yea. However, if I was an associate I would still be hesitant. Maybe not as a summer.

really, really doubt that's the only reason why the associate got canned unless there was something weird/sexual harassy about the hookup

Our firm was really really explicit about us not sexing up the staff or the actual associates. Might just be one of those power imbalance thing like any workplace taboo on employer/employee relations?

Of course, but the appearance of impropriety is enough to deep-six an Associate, particularly if the SA is female. But in reality, the Associate should be fired for stupidity.

Even if there as no quid pro quo, if the SA does not receive an offer, it's a slam-dunk harassment case. ("He pressured me, and pressured me.....so my work slipped....." No firm wants that public; they settle on day 2.)
