Moving to a different city?

What does the process look like for someone in BigLaw who wants to move to a different city? Mainly between LA and NYC? Is it possible?

Will depend on your firm and the respective sizes of its offices (and perhaps your gractice group) in each city... Hard to answer your question generally.

Plus how many of your similarly situated colleagues are also itching to move to your target city; there could be competition. (Austin openings/expansions reportedly often have multiple suitors in Dallas/Houston offices).

It's definitely possible, but you have to be sure to choose (or by luck be in) a practice area with a presence and demand in the target market. For instance, if you do IP you can have good lateral prospects to the Silicon Valley market. If you do complex litigation, not so much. A lot of it depends on luck too--there has to be an opening for your practice area at the time you are looking. Depending on how many openings there are, it may take you a while to find a position. You'll also need to take a new bar exam. But it is definitely possible, and even relatively common these days (at least NY --> SV/SF).
