With a HYS --> 2 years at V10 background (but not much else post-law school), what are the chances of getting into a M7 or H/S/W? As mentioned above, biglaw doesn't leave much room for impressive extracurriculars. What have you all seen happen?

i like how you respond to this with nothing but intuition and some self-justifying rationale, when ive actually seen the results first hand. my gf just went through the MBA application cycle and we kept track of who got in and who didn't (and people always say what their work experience is because it's so important). the lawyers universally underperformed their numbers, and like 80% of them struck out.

And the acceptance rate at top schools is generally <20%, so if 80% of them struck out, they are not underperforming their numbers. One of the reasons why lawyers generally face an uphill battle is because AdComs assume they lack quant skills. You seem anecdotal evidence for this. Another reason is that lawyers often do not need an MBA for their stated career goals. You can make a switch from BigLaw to Banking or Consulting without an MBA degree (which is essentially over $500,000 in opportunity costs over these two years for somebody in BigLaw), and you can barely make a switch from BigLaw to PE / HF, regardless of whether you get your MBA degree.

Ask yourself, do you really need your MBA. $500,000 is a lot of money.

The ability of a standard biglaw lawyer, or even one with an exceptional resume, to switch into banking or consulting is highly overrated on this board.

Didn't read all of these once it got contentious but had a friend at my firm do business school at night (a t10 school) for several years. Then left and is in a non legal role now. He loves it as I understand but at least in his situation the MBA did nothing to assist.

I have spoken with 2 asst. admissions directors (Wharton & SGSB) and thought about this for while. Both said they do get a ton of lawyer apps and you can't come off as a dejected or failed lawyer. With a good GMAT (+730) you could get into an M7 but mba admissions aren't as easy to predict as law school admissions (gpa and test score aren't enough). With an HYS law degree, and with you still being young, I would take a run at pivot jobs (consulting or ibanking) through your alumni network first, and just study for the GMAT on the side, looking to apply to school in Aug/Sept for Fall 2018 admission.

The longer you are in, the harder it is to get out.
