Asking for a day off as an SA

Fortunate to land an SA this summer, but my anniversary comes out July 7th, so I was hoping to take the Monday off to go somewhere with my spouse to celebrate. Is this too much to ask? If not, should I ask at the beginning, or once I start? Is this question moot because firms give you the Monday for July 4th weekend off?

I get the third off but yea, you'll get a three day weekend. I wouldn't take a vacay day otherwise though.

Seems antithetical to this:

Three month interview. Three month interview. Three month interview...

Is celebrating on the actual day worth potentially being the guy that bails on the day you're needed? Take the long weekend and do something.

Actually you should have planned better and gotten married on the 3rd or 4th to avoid this problem

Why are you still married in Biglaw?

There's only one way to show you're really committed to the firm....over everything and everyONE else....

Dont do this. You will have a three day weekend for the 4th anyway. Do not ask for more time off.

I'm going to second this question but with a slightly different fact pattern. I am getting married on a Saturday during my SA this summer. Obviously, I have pre-wedding day plans for that Friday (rehearsal, etc.). Months ago, I let the firm know that I would have to take this day off, but didn't get a response from the firm.

Should I be worried about asking for the day off for this reason?

My wifes grad school graduation was during my SA, asked to take the morning off- firm graciously offered me the day, I'm sure they'll understand if you need to take the day before your wedding off.

Why would you get married during the SA though. Should have done it in August when you had plenty of time to honeymoon and shit.

Disclaimer: The following advice applies to big law. Regional mid-law is different and I've heard anecdotes (all on TLS) of SAs getting no-offered for idiosyncratic reasons.

With that out of the way: Take a day off (or two) for your anniversary or your Mom's birthday or your sister's graduation or whatever. Just let the firm know in advance. No one is going to care.

Yeah, rpupkin said exactly what I was going to say. I took a day off at a DC biglaw firm for my five-year college reunion. And it was the first week of the summer, which wasn't ideal admittedly. Just be an adult about it. Let the program coordinator or whoever know about it well in advance. When you get there, and find out who you will be working with, let the appropriate person know. Like, if an associate is supervising your work on a memo or something, let him/her know. And definitely make sure not to miss deadlines etc. I've summered at two different DC biglaw firms and this would have been accepted and unremarkable at either place.

I will be in a public interest internship this summer (legal aid). Is it all right if I ask for two days off so I could go to doctor's appointments in June and July? I can make those days up by working two extra days after the end of the internship. Is this fine?

Yes, of course. You can take time off for medical appointments. It's very unlikely that they'll expect or want you to work extra days to compensate.

What is happening in this thread? Seriously, calm down people.

Bros are visiting most weekends this summer (NYC ftw!). Think the firm will mind if I take off every Friday? I mean, have the entire month of August off, but there is no time like now.

In all seriousness: communicate w/ recruiting as far in advance as you can, limit diversions to necessities, etc. This is just like any other job - just be reasonable, communicate, and plan ahead.

Dude getting married: Yeah, mostly you're just dumb for not scheduling it in August when you have plenty of time, but you can take a day for this.

Anniversary bro: Don't do this. You can probably get away w/ it b/c no one actually cares about summers that much, but I wouldn't in this instance and I'm not particularly risk averse.

Maybe his/her fiance has a stricter schedule and can only take time off in July. Or maybe one side's family wouldn't have been able to make it in August.

But, yeah, call the poster "dumb" even though you don't know shit about anything. TLS sucks sometimes.

I have this condition where I lose consciousness after it's been dark for a little while. I'm usually recovered by morning though - do you think firms would accommodate this and let me go home every evening or so?

No... it's pretty damn fair to call him dumb. You have loads of time to plan a wedding or can delay it for more than a month if necessary. Also you're on notice for when you'll be serving as an SA and generally for how long AGES before you actually get there - so you can easily plan around this also.

I got married right before law school, but assuming that wasn't an option for OP there's always 3LOL year. What, will you be too busy studying?

Delivery may have been off, but actually going to defend skers sentiment.

This SA is the most important thing Married Dude is going to do this calendar year. Most folks set their date <18 months before their wedding; Married Dude has been aware (or should have been aware) the rough SA timeline (never changes) since he enrolled in school.

"Dumb" - perhaps harsh. But definitely poor planning - which is on Married Dude.

This logic is really tight if you make the assumption that the world revolves around law students and the nuances of their school/work cycles. But, you know, sometimes it doesn't. There are other people (your spouse, everyone's families) involved.

There was a summer last year who got married during their SA and even he acknowledged it was dumb. I'm all for shoring up the lack of perspective w/ law students and don't think that taking a day off for something important is that big of a deal, it's more like it's hard to actually enjoy all the stuff that goes along w/ a wedding given the nature of being an SA. Possible that there are circumstances that absolutely demand it happen during that 10 week window, but probably not.

How fucked up is our profession that you can't even pick a day you want to get married with TONS OF PRIOR NOTICE TO THE FIRM without having your judgment criticized?

It's your wedding, FFS. It's one day. You should be able to do it whenever you want.

Yeah, but it's HIS wedding. The bride could possibly have a more pressing conflict but frankly I'm at a loss to come up with something plausible that would justify either. At the very least, it's a default to "dumb" unless proven otherwise and not the contrary.

Do you know any grown-ups? Despite all the hand-wringing ITT about how a summer associate position is a "three-month job interview" and "the most important thing you'll do all year," it's just not that serious of a commitment compared to many things in the adult/professional world. It's basically a 10-week recruiting party punctuated by occasional work assignments. Are you actually at a loss to come up with something "more pressing" than a few days of work/play as a summer associate?
