I heard from a reputable source (V19) that biglaw salaries won't be going up until a certain thread on TLS hits 100 pages.

Sorry to break the baseless speculation and for necro-ing this thread. But any views on whether the recent article in the FT about junior IB associates salaries going up by up to 20% is a possible indicator that big law should follow? I feel like that is the best indicator out there yet. Thoughts.

Why does anyone think banking salaries have anything to do with lawyer salaries?

it hurts, but that hoap fades

what remains is a void of dispair

when u realize that u only make like $35/hr after taxes

Isn't it obvious? A satellite hoping to compete with the big three (who can attract associates by virtue of Philly prestige) would have to bump up associate salaries even higher. And then the big three will feel compelled to respond in kind. The only question is who will flinch first in this game of associate-recruiting chicken.

The winners of this bidding war will be the associates. And the losers, of course, will be the partners who work for firms with significant Philly presences--their precious PPPs are about to take a major hit. Stay tuned.

I mean, we could debate whether somewhere in the neighborhood of 2-4% is a "major hit" at a firm with $2M PPP. But point stands that the partners will no doubt be screaming about how atrium renovations in Fort Lauderdale don't pay for themselves.

Honestly, making less than market in Philly is still "winning" though

W&C traditionally does not have true first years (everyone clerks) or pay bonuses. They are also more of a boutique, so I don't really see them as much of a market indicator.

In any event, I predict this round of raises will see the V20 (ish) firms start to depart from the rest of the v100 (ish) firms in comp. We shall see.

Going down from what? 160k? That mark was set in 2007 prior to crash. Why would they go down?

They've already gone down from inflation and will continue to do so. 160k today is about 180k or so on 2007.
