this article is amazing.
i have heard generally from people at various firms that the current group of junior associates is terrible. fact or boomer fiction?zweitbester wrote:a) cusenation, get the fuck out of this thread.
b) this new "bidding" war reaffirms the value of midlevel associates ITE. Gotta retain them. There are not that many trained ones out there...
I work at K&E. I know of an NSP who billed more than 3,000 hours last year and received a $200,000 bonus.Actus Reus wrote:cusenation wrote:Why the reaction? can't be curious? chill out. plus, Kirkland bonuses rarely are worth the extra amount of work/life events you've missed
i don't work there so not really. i just know that it's rarely worth the extra effort. is the extra 5k worth the 200 hours? rarely.
if you're summering there, or working there, it's just a good sign bonuses went up. good news all around.

What? Does K&E have a special bonus with no cap or something or is this possible if you bill 3,000 (woah) at most biglaw firms? Or are you like a 8th year or something?Anonymous User wrote: I work at K&E. I know of an NSP who billed more than 3,000 hours last year and received a $200,000 bonus.
Most firms are lockstep (at least of the firms being discussed in this thread), so no, not possibleBr3v wrote:What? NSP = non share partner, and K&E is known for above market bonuses, so its really not that unbelievable. If the new market is ~$100k for people with that seniority at other firms, double market for 3,000 hours seems like the least they can do.Br3v wrote:What? Some firms will have pure lockstep compensation with no billable hours requirements (thus your bonus is only tied to class year) (generally white-shoe NYC firms). Most firms will offer pure lockstep bonuses tied to class year only but require associates to first meet a bonus-eligible floor first (as mentioned earlier ITT). Firms like KE (and to an extent QE) make it a point to beat the market by offering high bonuses tied to performance (usually a multiplier of just your hours billed + base class year bonus). Some firms have black box compensation that generally hovers around market with slight variations (e.g., Jones Day). Other firms will just barely beat market like DPW just did but generally still be lockstep (e.g., Irell). And some firms will ignore market altogether and just do their own thing (does Boies still let you gamble your bonus contingency style?).Br3v wrote:What?
