Letter to Alumni

Postby kidfromny » Wed Nov 19, 2014 9:45 pm

I recently applied for a position at a private practice firm. If I want to reach out to an alumnus who is a partner at the firm, would it be inappropriate to mention that I recently applied for a position at the firm in my initial email?

*Partner thoughts*

Oh hey, some kid emailing me. Whatever. Maybe I'll read it later.

*23.2% chance he reads email 5 days later*

*assuming he reads it*

Okay, that's cool. "Hey recruiting people, do you know who the fuck this kid is?"

Recruiting people: "Yeah, he applied for a job a few weeks ago."

Why the fuck wouldn't he have told me that. Weirdo.

*Nothing else ever happens*

What the hell were you going to include in your email to him if you weren't going to let him know that you recently applied to his firm?

Dear Ms. Partnerlady:

My name is Two Ell. I noticed that you and I are both alums at State U! I don't know about you, but this weather really makes me want to go ice skating, then follow it up with a cup of coffee. If that sounds good to you, maybe we could meet up and do both of those, preferably on Saturday. You can check the appropriate box below.

And did you know State U. is playing Conference Rival U. this weekend! Go team! Hope all is well! And if you happen to know anyone hiring lawyers, feel free to let me know. Oh yeah, and the boxes:

o YES o NO

Best regards,
Two Ell, J.D. Candidate
